  • Why I Ask for What I Want on Gift Giving Occasions

I recently wrote about the Mother's Day journal idea which I discovered online, then instructed J that I wanted, and then mostly implemented for myself. (J and LO did absent themselves for about a half hour on the Saturday night before Mother's Day in order to make this year's card, although...

  • Too Little Too Late?

Every year about this time, we begin hearing about the things we should have done to make the holiday season easier, cheaper and more fun. We should have savings set aside, we should have stocked our pantries, we should have been shopping all year. Yes, we should have. But if we didn't? What then...

  • Broke for Christmas

Broke at Christmas may very well be the worst kind of broke, especially if you have kids. I remember one year when I was totally broke. Out of a job, staying with Mom and Dad, trying to keep my little girl in clothes... and then it was Christmas. I can't tell you all that I did, but my sum total...

  • Goodwill is a Special Thrift Store. Why?

I pulled the car into a parking space adjacent to the Goodwill/Easter Seals building in West St. Paul, Minnesota. My neighbor had been selected as General Manager for the new Goodwill Store in our small city. She had raved about the Tour she had completed several months ago. Based on her suggestion,...

  • Give the Gift of a Book on Frugal Living

I have a favorite book on Thrift and Frugal Living. It is The Complete Tightwad Gazette . Written by Amy Dacyczyn and published in the 1990’s, Amy brought to the public a terrific newsletter. Eventually a book was published which contained her thoughts and suggestions. Through her newsletter and this...

  • Re: Christmas 2012

Our son was literally so awful around the Christmas season, that SO bought a bag of real lump coal and put it under the tree from Santa. Which meant the gifts we had ready for Xmas stayed hid and are the start of our gift stockpile for next year. A real wooden castle with figurines, a couple of shirts...

  • Re: Christmas Gifts Ideas Under $5

Vistaprint.com has some really good deals. You can get a free calendar (lots of designs to choose from and you upload your own photos) for shipping costs (about $3.25). You can also take some of those photos and transfer them to other products (mugs, mousepads, etc). They have some really good deals...

  • Meandering

Thanksgiving evening, 2011. I'm sleepy, tired and still full of pumpkin pie. The day was bright and sunny but I didn't get a chance to stick my nose out the door. I decided to checked my email since it was the only thing I could think of that didn't take much physical exertion.Considering...

  • Christmas in July

That's an almost worn out phrase; you'll find it all over the internet, but it's something to keep in mind if you're frugal. Not having Christmas in July, but buying for Christmas while it's July. The key is to be careful and not buy anything at full price. Sales, clearances, and...
