  • Re: Is sewing frugal?

Quite often a store like Joann's will put patterns on sale for a$1.00 or some very low price, compared to the envelope price. That is when you buy patterns, because otherwise they are horribly expensive. Like was mentioned, find some very easy basic styles and then use your imagination to make those...

  • Re: Sewing project challenge

I'm in! My stash is huge and yet, when I saw Joann's flyer today all I could think of was a whole bolt of muslin for half-price!!" My current projects are two Halloween costumes, a couple of knit tops, and a matching top and jacket set. It's Wednesday and maybe I can get the top and...

  • Practicing on Scraps? Turn them into a useful item.

If you have needlework projects that are unfinished, or that you used a piece of scrap fabric to try out a new stitch or idea, don't waste those samples. Bind the edges of them and use them for place mats, cup mats, endtable scarves, or table runners. Covers for an upholstered chair arm is another...

  • Re: A question for those who have made cloth napkins

I have made cloth napkins for my family. The best material and my favorite material for cloth napkins, dish rags, and dish towels is homespun. Homespun fabric can be purchased at Wal-Mart for $2.00 a yard, sometimes $1.00 a yard if on the sale table. Most of the homepsun fabric is dark colored plaid...

  • Re: button jars

Great Way to Recycle Those Unused Buttons! Ever wonder what to do with the "stuff" that is left-over when you finish an art project. Stuff like yarn, felt, colorful buttons , beads, colored pencils, paper scraps with interesting designs, fabric - those things just a bit too small to use. Well...

  • Re: Shopping a Garment District for Fabric

I may be able to get a small group together and take the train over. If anyone is interested, let me know. It is a really fun place to shop!

  • Re: Shopping a Garment District for Fabric

I was just looking over a newletter from our local American Sewing Guild chapter (which I will soon join) and found that they are planning a trip to the NYC Garment District in October. The group is based in Clifton for those who are local and want to go. I'll keep you posted when I get more information...

  • Re: Shopping a Garment District for Fabric

I don't drive into NYC. I took NJ transit and Path to 33rd street. I took it a little at a time. I walked up and down West 39th Street and went into every retail shop I found there. It was like being a kid in a candy store. There is so much fabric you can''t believe it. The sales people are...

  • Walmart Fabric

Hi everyone. I live in Bergen Cunty, NJ. I love to sew. I was just getting really into it when Walmart decided to discontinue fabric. Whats more, Rag Shop is no longer with us. I stocked up on Walmart's dollar fabric before they got rid of it. I am in the process of building a list of new sources...

  • Fabric Yardage measuring machine

Does anyone remember the machine used in fabric stores up until the 1980's or so, that measured the yardage just by passing the fabric thru a slot in the machine? Do you know the name of the machine? I wonder what happened to all of those machines? They just seemed to disappear off the face of the...
