Here are some tips that you may or may not know that are likely to save some of the time and expense on the laundry and clothing budget.

Use less detergent than required. Often you won't need as much as the box recommends so play with the amounts.
Make your own detergent for pennies. There are numerous recipes for this on line. Everyone has their favorite.
Learn stain removal tricks. From getting out grease with flour to how long and in what to soak grass stains. A little extra effort can save money.
Line dry. Four loads dried a week, saves over $100 a year! One other thing this does is keep the wear and tear down on the clothing. Where exactly do you think that lint in the dryer catcher comes from? It’s cloth break-down.
Re-wear. Hang up and use again any clothing that is not actually soiled or smelly.
Buy at thrift stores. This is especially good for children's clothing. They grow so fast that what you bought this month may not fit next month. This goes for shoes too!
Have different sets of cloths. Have some you only wear around the house, some that are for nice events and others for the garden. This will save on stains that don't come out for things that don't matter.
Learn to stitch and sew at least a little. Even just some slight alterations or mending can keep an article of clothing usable for quite a while.
Hand me downs. Save what one child may out grow for the next. If you don't have a next, maybe a friend, relative or neighbor does and also has an older child you can GET hand-me-downs from!

Using these tips can help stretch the cost that is associated with clothing and caring for that clothing!

Our old electric dryer died a couple of years ago so we sold it for scrap and started using a clothesline. The electric bill went down by $30/mo. And we gained space to store canned food!

I also have two drying racks that I use indoors in wet weather, or out on the deck in good weather. And the deck railing is very good for heavy stuff like comforters. Sometimes I can have four loads drying at once.

The downside is that you have to plan ahead further, there's no running something quickly through the laundry. And you have to keep an eye out for weather changes!

In your instructions for mixing the laundry powder, when you say 11-14 oz of soap are you referring to its weight or its measurement in a cup? I tried it by weight and I'm thinking maybe that's wrong. I used it on a batch of towels and the grated soap didn't dissolve completely so I had to rewash it all in warmer water. I used Ivory bar soap and nitially washed in cold water. Or maybe the grated soap isn't finely grated enough? I used a regular sized cheese grater. How do you get the grated soap to be a finer texture. It cleaned very well and had no odour at all- I loved it otherwise.

Hi,

I have been looking into homemade laundry soap and if you would have mixed in Arm and Hammer washing soap you would have enough for about two years. I found the recipe on Stretcher and can only find the washing soap online.

If you could heat the jar and melt the soap you could still do this, or take a bit and use it with vinegar so that it doesn't over sud.

I found that using Pine Sol is harsh on the clothes. I try to find gentle soap and if it is sudsy, put in vinegar.

I live alone, and am amazed at how much laundry I make. As often as possible I do it all, wash, dry, fold and put away, but it seems at least once a month I have 4 loads to do. I change my clothes after working at a client's home (health care) and then if I've cleanned my place and I have to sleep in a clean nightgown or pajamas each night. And some nights after going out those go into the basket too. Yes, I have a lot of clothes!

The last time I was out of washing detergent, I used a little bit of my hand soap (natural homemade lemon scent) and a little vinegar to cut down the suds. It worked great. I have been looking locally for Arm & Hammer washing soda to mix with grated soap for it seems the most frugal way to go- about 15 cents a load. I'm going to ask Walmart if they will stock it. If not, it is about $5 a box online.

Well, good news! I was going through a Reader's Digest all-things-household book when I happened on a section on washer troubleshooting. Turns out that both of my washer woes (poor agitation, not spinning) can be caused by a loose drive belt. Now that we know what the problem probably is, the husband can go in and tighten the drive belt, which will be a lot less hassle than hauling out one washer and putting in the other. But he still doesn't really have time to do it until Christmas break. Maybe I can press the issue and get my washer working again for Thanksgiving. When I was agitating the clothes by plunger last night, he came and said sorrowfully, "We'll get you a real washer one day." I think I'm going to pounce on that pity and sorrow and get my washer repaired sooner.
