  • Re: Need help buying eyeglasses

I did what sunshinetreva did, sorta.  I was not clever enough to buy from a company that would service for free, but I did invest in a pretty expensive pair of titanium frames for around $300.  Last exam, I didn't get new frames, just new lenses.  I've had these for eight years.  The titanium is good, because if you ...

Here's a link to a good explanation of  how to cook beans.  This page really helped me improve my bean cooking. http://chanfles.com/comida/beans/frijoles.htm

  • Re: What can I make with corn tortillas?

Oh yeah!  The toaster oven is a great way to make tostada shells and tortilla chips that have no fat.  They taste better than bagged chips. You can also use hye bread (Armenian flat bread) and it tastes just like a cracker.  In fact, it tastes like an expensive cracker.

I'm not Mexican, but, living in L.A. you get really familiar with some kinds of Mexican food.  They sell tortillas at even the Asian markets here, which seems odd, but is convenient.  Everyone eats them. Mostly, tortillas are used as a flat-bread, like pita bread.  They're served along with dinner, and you can pick up ...

Umm.. gray soup is pretty much what you'd expect from white and black beans mixed.  It tastes like beans!  Add bacon or chicken broth for more flavor.

  • Re: having a lower income and higher expenses

What I meant is that a large population of permanent renters is politically unstable for property owners, especially landlords.  If rents start to rise, people form groups and push for rent control.  This puts the brakes on specuation, and rents are forced to rise predictably.  The property owners all start moaning in pain, because ...

  • Re: Dumpster Diving and Curb Picking- do you do it?

I'm really enjoying this post. I was a curbside picker for a while, until I realized I had a problem with it.  Now, I avoid picking stuff, but keep an eye open just in case the thing I need is likely to be on the curb.  Things I've gotten include computers, chairs, stereo components, speakers, computer printers, tables, books, ...

[quote user="jennylyn"] Yes housing costs have definitely risen . . . my parents bought the house I grew up in for $80,000 about 26 years ago.  Now it would sell for $350-$400K.  Incomes here have definitely not kept up.  That house, though nice, was not a huge mansion, simply a 3 bedroom, 2 bath house with eat in ...
