• Re: The Poverty Business

At what point does a business transaction become a crime?
Only when it is illegal. Morality and decency are different issues and those are definitely in question with these businesses.
I graduated college in a down market- pretty much the main ...

  • Re: I have no clue how to get into college

The ACT has a broader subject matter and goes a little higher on the math, as I recall.  The biggest difference was the ACT required a writing sample but the SAT does now too, right?  I took both and the ACT struck me as a little tougher than the SAT.  I really want to emphasize how much a good deal dual enrollment can ...
  • Re: People who have given up looking for jobs ....

I struggle with this myself- have been unemployed since February.  Luckily I had been busy...moved out of the Midwest, got married, dealt with all the issues of cross-country move and combining households.  And have been filling out applications and going on interviews all this time. In many ways I am lucky- I'm still young ...

  • Re: Food Mistakes I've Learned

Keep track of stray/wandering produce after a shopping trip.  An onion once got loose in my husband's car, got lodged somewhere, and we didn't find it until the trunk smelled like something had died and rotted in it.  Rotten onion is a smell that will inspire dry heaves.

  • Re: Credit Cards for Those Under 21

I'm of mixed feelings on this measure.  Bear in mind I think restricting *drinking* to 21 and above is stupid, too.  "No credit without a co-signer unless you can prove sufficient income" should be the rule for everybody- why do we have to add an extra "layer" of law for the young adults?  Credit card ...

  • Re: Scanning and bagging your own groceries
I think it depends on the chain.  I find safeway very helpful and they employ teens and  special people. Even people stocking shelves ask you if you need help if you are standing there looking at something.   They all seem happy to work there.
A fair point.  And the ...

  • Re: Scanning and bagging your own groceries
I don't like unemployment, but I don't value the service they provide enough to use it most of the time.  And I think that gets to the heart of this discussion.  In tough times, people are more careful about the choices they make with their money. And it doesn't mean service people ...

  • Re: Questions about Apartments

Greetings from my new, rented townhouse!  Yep, I've gone through the apartment shopping thing recently with my fiance and sadly, most of the above terms were pretty typical of what we saw.  Remember though, if you seem to be a "prime" tenant to your potential landlord you may have bargaining room. I bargained down ...

  • Re: Anybody Better Off Now?

You'd think I wouldn't be better off in my situation, but really I am.  About 2 months ago I got laid off.  I had seen it coming and had saved what I could.  Unemployment is enough to cover my expenses.  A friend offered me a good deal on renting a room in he rhouse, so I'm moving out of my apartment (would ...

  • Re: Demand for Food Pantry Groceries & Food Stamps Rising High

For those beating up on folks with a $55K income, remember the location of this story- NEW JERSEY.  High cost of living and you are taxed to death.  The money doesn't go nearly as far as in Georgia or here in Indiana.  Not to mention NJ has some of the highest healthcare costs.  They also cite Lake Forest, IL-  ...
