  • Re: So what is middle class?

I consider middle class to have enough of what you need and want, and money in the bank. I think it's important to teach your kids how to handle their money wisely, for any earning level. I'm sure my parents make at least the higher end of that scale. I always appreciated that we were able to take trips as a family and see the ...

  • Re: 4 - 24 - 2007 Project Laundry List

I can't wait to look at that website, and I did hang my laundry up totally by accident on the 19! :)

  • Re: Solar Oven

That's actually one of my goals for this summer. I'm going to be quick and simple about it. I have an old black graniteware pot (the speckly kind you can roast a turkey in) , a sheet of glass, two boxes, black fabric, and newspaper.  I can't wait to try it, I've just heard tehy get very hot and to be very careful. I plan on ...

  • Re: Anyone keep animals (livestock) ?

When I worked on a farm, 1880's living history farm, we always fed the chickens a bit of corn and oyster shells (but if there's a bit of gravel around that should work too) and then any scraps we had from the kitchen. Bread, veggie peelings, old cookies, etc...they loved it and it didn't change the taste of their eggs. They also liked ...

  • Re: How to save water?

Something that farmers could do, when I have my farm I plan on doing this, is to leave every other row unplowed, so the grass and plant matter conserves water. However all the equipment would have to be switched, so it's probably not as viable, but it works well for our garden. I save all the water in my glasses at the end of the day and use ...

  • Garbage picking for things

I was driving home from meeting today when I saw a sign on a neighbor's lawn, "free- working fine" on a TV. My parents have been looking for one for a while to use with the treadmill and lo and behold, da dah! there one was. I got home, told my mom about it, and she went with me to load it in the car.  Plugged it in, hooked it ...

  • Re: My Adventure in Thrift

I haven't bought them but a friend on mine and I are practically the same sizes. She's just been giving me things she's tired of wearing. :) I've added two great sweaters to my closet, flannel pj pants, and a pair of dress pants. If I lose a few more pounds I'll be able to wear them to work, right now there a bit too tight ...

  • Re: Easter Egg Dyes

I dye wool to knit with, and spin, but it's fun teaching others about colors that can be had form common things. People are always so interested to hear about it.

  • Re: Why Do We Stretch Dollars, Count the Pennies and Scrape the Bottom of the Barrell?

So eventually when I move out and get a full-time job, I can buy a house with cash. Not to mention, being a huge environmentalist, I can reduce my impact on the planet and live wit ha cleaner conscience.

  • Re: Re: Anyone ever use Sylvan or another tutoring service?

I like Karenteach's idea of requiring her to go, and having a consequence if she doesn't. After school might work out best, or early in the morning. I'd definitely get her teacher in on the discussion if your DD is unwilling to help the two of you communicate. Good luck!
