    Baptism/Christening gift...

My husband and I are very excited to be the Godparents of a 2 month old on February 15th.  What do you give for this occasion?  I have been to very few and we do not have children yet so I am confused.  Is it always money or a religious trinket of some sort?  My friend is on the practical side and they have very little space.  I apologize if I put this in the wrong spot.  I chose here because there is often gift talk in this section.  Anyway, I'd appreciate any and all ideas.

For baptisms, we have given a children's Bible to each of our nephews/nieces and our godchildren. Most often a religious item is appropriate. A Christian bookstore is a good place to start or any bookstore may have books with Bible stories. Our boys received Bibles, Christian children's books, a picture frame with a religious theme (put his baptism picture in it) and some cute framed pictures with Bible verses. My newest niece was just baptized and she received a CD of children's favorite religious songs, which is also a neat idea.

    Hope this helps!

Our family usually has a big party for a baptism.  The god-parents traditionally give a savings bond, or open a savings account for their newest god-child.  Family and friends can contribute or give gifts.  The savings account is available to deposit gifts in as the child grows, by family and the god-parents.  In our family this has worked out well, as a child grows we can give a small token gift and make a small deposit as well.  I don't know if this is traditional elsewhere or if it is just a family tradition.

My god children received a nice Children's bible, and a savings account!   Don't know if it's a girl or boy, but you could consider something like a nice gold chain with a cross or other Christian-themed pendant.

Thanks for the thoughts so far.  My godchild is a girl.  I wanted to give her a savings bond and I emailed her mom about getting her social security number.  She called me said she got the email but did not mention her social security number.  Maybe she doesn't feel comfortable giving it out...  She may have just forgotten but I don't want to push.  You do have to have a social security number to get a savings bond, right?

Yes, you do.  I am LDS, so we do infant blessings instead of christenings, but I have always given a cute pair of bootees & a handmade bookmark for the child's Scriptures. I was raised as a Protestant, and this is what my mother also gave.  Some of the infants are now adults, and altho not many have the bootees, all of them still have the fancy handmade bookmark.
