Thanks for the info on the Sam's Club napkins.   I have shelved my plan to buy the club pack at our wholesale club.  However, there is a company nearby that caters to the hotel industry.  I bought some good towels from them many years ago.  I'll check out their napkins the next time I'm in the area.

I found a cotton blend fabric, pretty sturdy NOT white that I will try out as well.  I had forgotten that I made a set of napkins for my mother from the same fabric - I had embroidered each of her napkins, by hand.  Not planning to do that with mine though!

I halved bandannas and have used baby-sized wash cloths.

Mom made some years ago. Don't know what happened to them. I think they had red & white checks.

Re: A question for those who have made cloth napkins

I started making our napkins 20 years ago when our 3-year-old son went through so many paper napkins.  Originally I cut up linen tablecloths I found at garage sales and hemmed them, but changed from that to terry-cloth washcloths a few years later.  I still have some that I made 15 years ago, I use these as rags for cleaning now.  The secret to making them last is to purchase inexpensive ones you can get in a bundle of 12 at Walmart.  They are plenty thick enough, but not so thick that a crochet needle will not go through the edge.  I do a simple stitch around each one.  I prefer a scrol??? stitch.........I am not familiar with crocheting terms as I just made this one up myself.  You can find edging stitches on YouTube, demonstrated very well by many generous people.  I have given these as baby-shower gifts and to family members to use as dishcloths, napkins and washcloths.  Each member of my family has their own color, so it is easy to sort the laundry.  I have autum colored ones for Thanksgiving, and so on for each holiday.  It is easy to do when I am sitting down to help with homework or traveling or waiting at the doctor's office, etc.  I even do this when I am substitute teaching!  They last forever, it seems.  I got the idea from my husband's grandma, as this is what she did to make them last during the depression.

We buy kitchen dish cloths or wash cloths from the dollar store.  They hold up great and are "pre made" cloth napkins.

I shopped and found some on Ebay - Restaraunt quality - bought them three years ago and they are still beautiful, wash up nicely - very much an excellant value.  Not 100% cotton, but no ironing EVER - a blend but fabulous - and I'm thrilled with them.

I have a heavier checkerboard tablecloth that I want to use for cloth napkins.  I want to make them to use for when we have company over for bbq"s, not just for everyday.  I'm trying to get over the feeling that I'm being weird by using cloth napkins for company,

I find that my family and my guests both enjoy the cloth napkins more.  More than likely if you use that checkerboard cloth for BBQ napkins you'll get raves!  I say GO FOR IT!

    Enjoy!
