    What has happened with Beans??

I just have to ask....what has happened to beans. I used to be able to buy a bag of dried beans for under a dollar for a pound this weekend I couldn't find anything less than 1.49 a pound in my local supermarkets. Dried beans are now more expensive than canned. I prefer the dried because I have more control over the seasoning especially salt. Does anyone have any ideas where to find them cheaper. I searched some places on line and they are even worse. One site had dried kidney beans at 2.31 a pound and that did not include shipping, and you had to buy 25 pounds to get the price that low!! Any ideas? am I missing something??

We shop at a local Mennonite store that offers food in bulk and I noticed the price of dried beans has gone up. Still prefer them over canned.

MountainMom, ask around among the older people in your community. They get dried beans, different kinds, in the commidity boxes. A lot of them here dont use them or dont use all of them. They are eager to pass them on to people that can eat them. I know my Mom cant eat beans anymore. Maybe post on freecycle and ask.  Maybe a visit to the Senior Center and ask some of the people there. Just an idea. It has worked for me. I have red kidney, pintos, great northern, all given to me from those boxes for free. Babs

The price of dry beans has been over $1 a pound for months in the stores I shop. I can get them on sale for $1 so I wait until then to stock up. Canned beans cost more as they aren't under $1 either and have less than a pound per can.

Dry beans used to (last year) go on sale for .79 per lb bag from .99.  They are now 1.19 in my local grocery and don't seem to ever go on sale.

But, I get about 4 cans worth of cooked beans per bag.  The cheapest cans I can find run about .60 per can so approx $2.40 per lb.  So the dry is still working out cheaper for me.

Either way though, even with the increase cost, whether canned or dried, beans are still a bargain I think!  Especially when compared to meat.

lol  I thought the thread was about one of our members Bean!      Beans haven't really gone up here.  Some sales aren't as good on canned beans but they are at places that aren't the cheapest.

I don't buy dry beans much.

canned beans went on sale last week for 3/$1 so I stocked up on those instead of dry.

Dear ALl, SO DID I think that the post was about our member BEAN.

Once I read the thread, I understood -- & then saw a post by BEAN on another thread today.

I haven't checked the price of beans, since I have some stashed away and grew some of my own this year, but I did find that lentils have gone up in price about 40 cents a pound! Then I looked in the Mexican food section and found them for only 10 cents more than last year. If you have ethnic markets there, you might look to see if they have better prices.
