Drove back from the Uintah Basin this morning with a car full of produce. Oldest DD's garden produced more pimentos that she can process, so I brought back grocery bag full, plus three 8-quart buckets full of them. Half of those are sliced & in the dehydrator. One of DD's former neighbors from Vernal phoned her a couple of days ago. All 3 of the neighbor's trees were loaded with apples (Red Delicious, Golden Delicious & Gala) & none of the neighbors children wanted to come pick them, because they were not sprayed. DD went & stripped the trees - - she must have around 6-7 bushel or so in various boxes & clothes baskets. She phoned all her present neighbors to see if anyone could use some of them. No one was interested, so we did a bushel into some cider & two big apple crisps last night, & I brought home about 3 bushel to process for her. My 2nd dehydrator is full of slices, 10 trays worth, drying.
Tomorrow I plan to bottle apple slices from the better apples, then do applesauce from those that have useable parts, but not in nicely cut slices -
. I brought back 3 dozen of her jars to fill, but if I need more, I can get them here.
Has anyone else noticed that there doesn't seem to be the shortage of jars this year like there was last year?
DD is making more applesauce, & making cider from the smaller of all 3 kinds of the apples.
Just because my garden is dead doesn't necessarily mean I am done processing, I guess.
