    Southern Louisiana Style

My husband is from Baton Rouge so I am looking to do our master in a southern Louisiana style. I have a few things but not alot. We were there last month and I say these pictures that were place on what looked like a thin piece of slate, does anyone know were I can find something like that on line? Any help would be great in the style. Not looking to do bold but settle colors, help.

I am not sure what those are but I wanted to post to try to bring this to the attention of some of our other southern posters.

I live very close to Baton Rouge. I am not sure, though, about the thin piecesof slate. Perhaps if you can find a picture online of what you are referring too we may be able to help. From my guessing what you may be referring too, it sounds like something you could find at places like Lowes and Home Depot. Perhaps you'd even get lucky and find a place that has broken, slightly damanged, or left over slate tile that you could use.

As far as southern Louisiana style (for a bedroom), I would go with wrought iron. This is very "southern looking", easy to find and easy to incorporate with whatever colors you like and/or already have. It's always been my dream to have one of those big iron beds (maybe one day... LOL). I think they look very romantic, old-fashioned but modern at the same time. I have several iron decorations in my house from various places. Just a couple of weekends ago I purchased a nice, sturdy iron basket with flour de lis (sp?) on them from Hobby Lobby (on sale 50% off.. whooohooo!). They have tons of iron items there (crosses, wall decor, baskets, candle holders, etc.), at least in our area. You may want to try there because you can usually catch good sales and their website always has a weekly coupon (sometimes as good as 40% off or better).

I personally like the look of neutral colors (white, toupe, off-white, etc.) with the iron. For some reason, it looks more southern to me and makes the iron more noticable.

God bless and have fun decorating!

I love iron and have some iron features in our home.

You can decoupage or paint on slate.  My Mom did some paintings on slate (and other rocks) while she was alive.  She would let the individual rock slab suggest the picture.  Often she painted for hours with a brush that had only a single bristle, so the work was long and arduous.

This may be the work of a crafter, and you might look at craft shows to see if you can find someone who does this.  If decoupage, this can be done in your own spare time using supplies from craft stores.  If you find a crafter and think their work is expensive, you may want to try doing it yourself.

You might also search online for slate + painting or slate + decoupage or rock + painting (or decoupage).

    Hope this helps!

In Vermont, many old houses have slate roofs. Part of my house does. It is a dying art to fix them. we have slate quarrys. paintings of slate are very common here at craft fairs. Especially with family names and addresses. Babs

KMac, this is my first post.  I know what you are referring to. I have three of them.  They are southern designs, sort of pen and ink, placed on a piece of roofing slate.  I got mine at a Hallmark store in Metairie, LA.  Perhaps if you ask your local Hallmark they may be able to help you.  Hope this helps.  I am originally from New Orleans and love everything from that area.

The state colors are blue, white and gold. Light blue is a very restful color for a bedroom. Then you could use white and gold accent pieces like cushions, lamps, vases, etc.
