Good grief, the AC was on 60!!
A few days ago, we realised it was quite hot in here in the afternoon and evening. With guests over the weekend, I had the AC on 60 and it was still warm!! My husband went for some supplies and trekked up to the attic to work on the vents or some such thing. I now have it set on 75 and it's cool..we'll see how warm it gets later this afternoon.
I don't want to see the electricity bill, grr.

Re: Good grief, the AC was on 60!!
I found our back rooms to be cooler than the living room. Obviously the heat from cooking and the sun coming through the front windows is part of the problem. We will try to work on that with changing cooking habits and putting some funds into curtains that may keep some of this light out.
Our landlord was supposed to be out here in April to check the AC and has not come by.

We have the same issues. When the AC runs, our bedrooms and bathroom are freezing but the kitchen and living/dining area are warm. Part of it is cooking and our living room is on the south side of the house. But the other part is that the thermostat is in the dining room off the kitchen so it kicks on when the kitchen heats up, not when the house is necessarily warm overall. And the furnace/AC is in the basement, right below the back bedrooms so the cold air is really forceful back there and less forceful up in the front of the house.
To help this, we close off the vents in the bedrooms or leave them cracked just a bit during the day when we are not them as much so more air is forced to the front of the house. We also have ceiling fans running to help the front area. The living room has thermal drapes that we keep closed during the day. I try to not heat up the kitchen by not using the oven (grill outside or use crockpot) and we try and keep the back door closed as much as possible (in the kitchen just off the dining area) so it doesn't set off the AC. I encourage the boys to play in their rooms or the basement as those areas are cooler overall.
I try and keep the thermo set at 78 to 80 during the day and 80 at night. With ceiling fans, it has helped quite a bit.

I don't mind the room temp being around 77 during the day but it has to be a cooler for us to sleep. I had the thermostat on 60 to battle the heat for a room temp of 80.

We have an issue with a solarium pouring in heat, but we've really only had one hot day so far. I was going to say, Brandy, would it help to use the gray stick up window cling for a few windows in the living room? Thermal something? Keeps out sun and heat, temporary, easy to take off in the fall. Have you seen it? Would be an investment, but should pay back in lower electric. Realize this post sounds a little disjointed, I don't know the name of the product.

Brandy-
We got some of those window shades from Walmart a couple years ago (the cheapest ones we could find) and they made an AWESOME difference. You can close them all during the day and the trailer (mobile home) is totally dark! They really are worth the investment.
Again, we live in a mobile home with little shade to help. To top it off, we have a beautiful window in the kitchen (end of the trailer) that's pretty much half of that wall. Well, the sun sets on that end and so by the time I'm in the kitchen to cook dinner it just gets too hot in there. Because of that, I tend to cook more on the weekends (when I can cook in teh morning) and less during the week after work (I defrost freezer meals a lot of the time). This helps to keep that end of the trailer cool as does the shades.
God bless,
Julie

Tracy,
I don't know what the name is either but it might be worth checking into.

We have some beautiful bamboo shades that were in here when we moved in. They look fantastic with the house and our style. But they do nothing for the afternoon sun.

Yeah, you have to get the ones that are made to block out sun light. Ours are solid white (I have curtins in front of them). They were very cheap (maybe like $3 each or something???) but then again we have small windows in a mobile home that are easy to find items for that size.
God bless,
