    Shaving suggestions?

My husband is in the military and therefore needs to stay clean shaven for work. There's no real dollar stores out here that sell shaving supplies since we're stationed in Japan, and so he ended up using Mach3 blades for the most part (which are at least cheaper than the other alternatives) The problem is he says he can only use a blade twice before it starts really cutting him, and not the hair. This gets expensive! I've tried getting him an electric shaver, but the few I've gotten him over the years have either gotten broken or not worked up to par. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to cut costs here?

Well, if this is any help, it's definitely the frugal way to shave, short of a straight razor and leather strop.  My DH was in the military many years ago before we met, served in Bosnia, and has both heavy whiskers and sensitive skin, enough so that he was given a special "chit" (not sure what a chit is) to exempt him from daily shaving because it caused him to break out so badly... he was allowed to do it every other day so his face wouldn't be hamburger. He found that shaving with a razor alternating with electric shaver worked best for the skin, but these days, for frugality, he uses the old-fashioned "safety razor" where you twist it to open up the hatch and drop in double-edged razor blades as needed. By twisting the handle, you can tighten the way the holder bends the razor blade. Looser leaves it more straight, and more likely to cut you, and tighter bends it, so that it hits your face at more of an angle, which is safer and more comfortable. We bought ours at Walmart a few years ago, not sure if they still carry them, and we still find the dispensors of double-edged blades at Walmart and elsewhere, so there must be others using them. A perk is, they don't clog as quickly as disposable razors and will shave an overgrown beard (or leg hair) more easily.

Here's a website with a lot of exclusive safety razors and supplies, including a more affordable one by Weishi, but still too expensive imho:

and here's one featuring many of the same brands, looks cheaper, but still not as cheap as the $5 Walmart Gillette butterfly top safety razor I bought years ago. Who knows, maybe those are out of production? Well even at $20, one of these would pay for itself in a few months over disposable plastic ones, and a better shave to boot. http://www.amazingshaving.com/page/amsh/CTGY/sar

good luck and I hope this helps!

Try some different brands - if it lasts longer, it may be worth it. I've had better luck with the Sensor Excel and other double bladed designs vs three blades. There seems to be a huge variety in durability between different razors, and different men have different hair coarseness.

My guys use a Mach 3 and a blade lasts a good month for them.

We also use hair conditioner as shaving cream

I do this too, on my legs. However, Brian uses the old fashioned soap in a cup & brush. The razor he uses is at least 20 years old. It's a Schick razor and it takes Schick Injector blades, that I can only find at drugstore.com now!! But the cool thing is, they are cheaper there, than the last store I found them at. Good luck!!

My husband has a similar problem with short razor life and getting nicks and cuts.  He has *extremely* dry skin.   He had been using Mach3 (and other expensive brands) which didn't really do any better than the "Good News!" disposable razors.  He started using my Noxema face cleanser to shave with and now he doesn't get nicked regardless of the brand of razor he uses.
