    Cleaning

I am looking for information on how to clean my home the green and cost effective way. Does anymore recommend any site or books?

My advice is to start with the 3=volume THE TIGHTWAD GAZETTE by Amy Dcyczyn.  It's probabaly in your Library -- if not, you can Inter-Library Loan it.

I don't know of any sites that have that information specifically, but using vinegar, baking soda and things like that are very cost effective and environmentally friendly. Try posting a question in the General folder about using products like those. A lot of people use them for various things.

Lemon juice is wonderful, too.  Combine with salt for scrubbing abrasive and or baking soda.  I've seen it used in toilets, copper pots and brass.  It has to sit for a bit but it does work.  ELBOW GREASE is an essential ingredient!

For the toilet you make a paste with baking soda and lemon juice...  let sit overnight and scrub.

Brass, paste with lemon juice, salt, flour.  Let sit for 15-20 minutes....then buff.  This can only be used on REAL brass...NOT electroplate!!!

I am not behind! I don't have to catch up! I just have to put on my shoes and shine when I smile my sink!!

I use baking soda in my tub -- just sprinkle it around and scour with a mild scrubby sponge. I use vinegar and water fwith a little liquid dish soap for windows and counters.  I add baking soda and vinegar as laundry additives.  Can I just sprinkle some Baking soda in my toilet bowl and swish?  Or would vinegar be better?  Any advise is appreciated.  I use Shaklee basic G for the outside of the toilet and seat.

    Re: Cleaning

The toilet bowl is one (& the only, includign the laundry) place where I use chlorine bleach OR Ajax/Comet with bleach ingredient.  I jsut checked RODALE'S BOOK OF PRACTICAL FORMULAS:  HUNDREDS OF EASY-T0-MAKE, EASY-TO-USE SOLUTIONS TO EVERYDAY PROBLEMS, & it agrees.  It says though that fi you have copper in your water, bleach will cause staining.  It says to pour 1/2 c of bleach in & apply the toilet brush; then let it sit for about 10 minutes, & then rinse by flushing.  Personally, this is the one place where I would not use vinegar, lemon, bakign soda, or any otehr "home remedy," as the issue of sanitation is just too prominent for me.  All dissention is welcome!

The only thing I have to say Deb is that some septic systems do not handle bleach well. One should use that in the commode with caution.

Ah!  See, Brandy, I have no inkling of the problems that face many homeowners, particularly in rural or semi-rural areas.

    Re: Cleaning

Out here, we have to have a system professionally installed and maintain it ourselves. The sensitivities of the systems play a big part in personal debates on which cleaners to use, what clothes washing solutions to use and such. Using a product that doesn't agree with the system can be costly.
