    Where's the Cream?

Remember the days of Mom opening the milk jug/bottle and the cap being full of rich delicious cream? I long ago stopped wondering where the cream went and assumed one day I might forget I once waited anxiously for just a taste of what was in the cap.

I have been on the hunt for the best balance of product and price. I have been sampling local, organic and hormone free milk from various stores. My latest purchase has turned up a surprise.

I chose to sample milk from Smith's Creamery this time because it looks appealing. The name itself makes me think of something wholesome and the color was not the white I have become accustomed to. Smith's Creamery is also a local supplier and their milk is rBGH free.

Then I opened the jug for breakfast this morning to be able to answer..."where's the cream?" It's right here in the cap!! I had to explain to my children what this was and they only looked at it suspiciously and were afraid to drink the milk. How sad is that?

The milk is higher in cost than some choices but after doing a bit of research and tasting the milk, which I have not liked in years, I think it's worth buying.

Do you miss the cream or the taste of milk the way it was?

We have only used skim milk for 30 years or so...we no longer like the way whole milk makes our mouth feel coated afterwards...BUT nothing like real cream whipped up instead of Chemical Whip, eh?

Are you not much more valuable than they? 27Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?

We are used to 1% but we used to get fresh milk when I was a teenager from my dads coworker. It was great.  You can farm milk here but calories!   love real whipped cream though~!

When I was a kid I thought it was fun playing with those paper caps, the ones that looked like a little bowl. I'd make up games with them. We'd go to the local dairy with 6 milk bottles in a wire rack, 2 or 4 times a week, and bring home six filled bottles. You knew the milk was fresh because the cows were right behind the store. The best was a First Grade field trip to that same dairy and we all got a carton of chocolate milk. That was when Los Angeles was still rural, back in the day. (Where did that expression come from?)

Exactly. I have deep concerns for the hormones and other chemicals used before the milk is processed. According to this dairy's site, they don't use those and produce something closer to natural.

I honestly don't worry about calories. The biggest consumers of milk here are the kids and they are either on the lower end of the weight spectrum or underweight so they can actually use extra calories.

The company does offer low fat milk so I'll likely check that out too.

Dh and I drink milk too so fat content matters.  I don't worry about the kids for calories, they are pretty normal weight wise. I used to buy homo.milk for them but since my ds is 3 1/2 I don't have too anymore.

    Re: Where's the Cream?

I found a place where I can get raw milk, and yes, it's cream top. They do skim some cream, but there's enough left to give it flavor and to skim off for a little butter.

(If I had to use nonfat or 1%, I'd use water. Stick out tongue )

Up until lately I've used organic milk, but raw milk is even better. I grew up drinking it and we had a milk cow when my kids were little. When a cow eats grass, her milk contains omega 3 acid, which our diets are sorely lacking. Grain fed milk cows, which all commercial cows are, don't have that.

I have read that homogenized milk isn't good for anyone because the homogenization process breaks fat globules into such tiny particles that they pass through the intestine walls undigested.

Ok, I'll quit. I've been watching this thread and wondering whether to jump in or not. You can ignore me if you like.Smile

I hate the taste of it. I take calcium supplements instead of drinking milk.

I read the same and began to wonder if this plays a part in my daughter's sensitvity to drinking milk. I didn't have a source of non-homogenized milk until now. I have not given her powdered milk nor have I cut this whole milk with water. We'll see how she does with this.
