    Potatoes $5 a bag?

    What's up with that?

When you can find them on sale for $1 a bag at other times. Grr. The last of my garden fresh potatoes are climbing out of there crates like some bad horror movie so they will be going in the ground! I had to buy potatoes for the first time since last July. $5 for 10 lbs, and $3 for 5 lbs. 5 lbs is about enough for 1 1/2 meals.

At that rate instant potatoes from the dollar store is cheaper.

Dear Michelle CinnamonHuskies, Potatoes have been $1/lb generally here ion San Francisco for some time.  I've tried freezing tehm raw, but IT DOES NOT WORK.  All the water oozes out from the frozen, raw potatoes.  On the other hand, prepared potato dishes work OK,including baked ones.

I hate to see how high potatoes are right now, judging from your experience!  Yours in Him, Deb

Are you not much more valuable than they? 27Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?

Potatoes have been $5 a bag for 10 lbs. at Walmart for some time here. It's frustrating, to say the least. We use a lot of potatoes, so I don't often buy them at Walmart. Instead I buy them at Aldi, which usually runs about $3 for 10 lbs., unless another store has them cheaper.

You can freeze potatoes quite easily if you parboil or blanch them first. My favorite thing to do (since potatoes don't last long enough to freeze them around here) is to bake extras when I make them. Then I refridgerate them and grate for hash browns for breakfast. They are so much tastier then the "ready to cook" brands from Ore Ida, store brands. If I make mashed potaotes I make enough to hold some back for potato pancakes. If I make them scalloped, well my dh wipes them out. Anyway, I am sure that these things could be frozen, but I just never have that opportunity. LOL

I should have added that green peppers are generally 99 cents a piece here. Eggs are usually $1.99 a dozen. Milk is $3.89 a gallon. It seems meat is never under $2.00 a pound on sale around here anymore.

Wow, I'm glad I have my 3 hens.  It's cheaper to have them than to buy eggs!  Was at Aldi yesterday and didn't notice the price of potatoes, but yeah, they usually do have the best price.  I wonder how the potatoe prices will be once the farmer's markets open... I did notice (again at Aldi) both whole milk and 2% were $2.99, so next buy I'm going to try Joyous's tip from the other thread (about adding water to stretch the milk).  DH thought it was a good idea just as long as I don't make it too watery.

Is the best way to store potatoes wrapped individually in newspaper and kept in a cool dark place?  Even in our cool basement, the potatoes sprout and my husband thinks they then taste old.  (I've been too lazy to try wrapping in newspaper.)

    Re: Potatoes $5 a bag?

eggs are always about $3 a dz here depending on brand.  but potatoes are cheap at the moment $2.50  on sale for 5lbs when I bought the last batch. don't go though many potatoes.   meat does go under $2 a lb on sale depending on what it is. reg. ground beef, chicken drumsticks, pork etc.

reminds me IGA has a bogo sale on lots of meats and other products this week. need to check it out to see if there is any real deals.  looking at the flyer..green giant klondike rose potatoes 5lb sale 2.99 so there must be cheaper deals out there.

Hmmm...two weeks potatoes were still $1.19 for a 5 lb. bag here; regular price, not sale price.  I'm wondering if they've gone up--will check tonight.

    Re: Potatoes $5 a bag?

I always check the sales flyers, and this week my very local grocery store (1 block away) has eggs 10 for $10, and potatoes I think 8 lbs. for $1.99. Plus milk 2 gals for $5. (They are often not compettitve, so I usually do my grocery shopping at Meijers Thrifty Acres, which is a few miles away. So was pleasantly surprised to see that this week, I can walk to the store.)

'Course, I remember when milk was $1.99 (sale price $1.79). Now a typical price is $3.09.

Also, pasta! Pasta has gone from 99 cents (sale was usually 2 for $1) to $1.69.

    Ack!
