You are welcome, Rowan. Do you use other cleaners that you need some homemade substitutes for?

I mix up my own wood polish for dusting and window cleaner as well but I have to find a "recipe" for those to give you accurate measurements.

Yes, wood polish and window cleaner would be the only other things I would need.  I use PineSol for my toilet bowl cleaner and I'm currently using up what is left of my Clorox wipes and Swiffer products.  I'm going to be getting a microfiber dry/damp mop once my Swiffer stuff is used up in order to both save money and recover my floor.  The wetjet Swiffer makes my floors sticky and filmy.  And I use a feather duster for my weekly dusting maintenance, but need something for polishing my furniture.  Thank you so much!  I really appreciate it.  :-)

Borax and baking soda make a great toilet cleaner. I buy salt/pepper shakers on sale or at thrift stores for easy to use containers for cleaning.

Wood polish: 1 part lemon juice to 2 parts oilive or vegetable oil. A little on a cloth goes a long way, rub in then use a clean cloth to wipe off.

Glass cleaner: 1 part rubbing alcohol to 1 part water, i fins sack cloth towels work well for cleaning

I can speak from experience on chemically induced problems. They can be very hard on a person with respiratory problems or allergies..my family suffers both.

A note on using essential oils for fragrance and added disinfecting power...some people are sensitive to these as well or to specific ones. I have carefully experimented to find which ones work for us.

Great idea on the salt/pepper shakers!!!  I never would have thought of that and had always shied away from using things like baking soda because of the powdery mess!!  Thank you!!

Thanks for the recipes.  I can't wait to try them!  Do you make wood polish in batches or only enough for the one job?  And where have you found sack cloth towels?  I was looking for some two years ago for a gift for my mom and ended up finding them at a craft store for an astounding price.

    Rowan,

    You are most welcome.

I make only what I need for the polish. Some suggest making it in larger amounts and storing it in the fridge in a spray bottle. I found the flour sack towels at Wal-mart. My Mother says they don't feel exactly like the ones her Mother had which were cut from actual sacks but they work very well.

That explains it.  My great-grandmother's family owned a bakery, so they always had flour sacks.  She made stacks and stacks of redwork kitchen towels and my mom got the last set.  She used them until they fell apart, so I wanted to make some new ones to replace them.  But I couldn't find that nice soft toweling anywhere!  Glad to know it wasn't my memory failing me at my young age!!!!  35 is too young to lose it completely!!  Big Smile

I add a few drops of dishwashing detergent to my homemade alcohol plus water cleaner.  It is cheap and cleans quite well.  I use it mainly in the bathroom (mirror, vanity, toliet) but it would work pretty much anywhere.  My husband doesn't care for the smell of the alcohol, but the odor quickly dissipates.
