My Son-Can I Homeschool Him? & How Do I Teach Him Algebra?

    Hello everyone,

I currently homeschool my disabled daughter & I might do the same for my son who attends a high school. Can I take him out of school now-he`s getting bullied(the school yr ends in June)? He really hates school & has said he`s not sure if he`s going back. If I can take him out, how do I teach him algebra if I do not know how? Any advice/suggestions/info would be grately appreciated.

     Welcome to the community!

Without knowing what state you are in, I can not say for certain what the procedures are for removing a child from school to homeschool him. It varies not only by state but even districts as well. Some are simple processes with little hassle and others experience challenges to get this done.

Since you already homeschool, you likely have the contacts to find this information. Call the local school board or the person you deal with in homeschooling your daugter and inquire about removing your son from public school. They should have the answers or be able to tell you who to contact.

Instructing him on areas that you are weak on is another matter. There are materials out there that are self explanatory and there are also videos with full instruction. Your budget and personal choices dictate what is best for you. Would you like me to find some of the options so you can see what is out there?

    Hi Brandy,

Thanks for replying to my message. I`m sorry I forgot to mention the state. We live in N.Y.(Buffalo area). I homeschooled him once before when he was 6(17 now) -it was around Feb. 98 that I took him out of school when I did start homeschooling. I was just wondering what steps to take. We are members of HSLDA, so I wil try to contact them. Thanks again for replying.

I didn't like Algebra growing up and I don't like teaching it either LOL.

I found several video programs available to teach algebra. I opted for a computer program, Switched on Schoolhouse, however because of cost. 9th grade Math in SOS is Alg 1, and 10th grade Math is Geometry. Used discs can be found inexpensively on ebay.

    Amy,

I am sick of public shools too.  My son homeschooled one semester and then went to private religious school in the area.  For math I used Saxon Dive which explain everything on the computer (like having a teacher and a blackboard). Then you do the excercises. 30 per lesson.  They have an Algebra program and I think it will prepare him for college.

    Good luck

     ADW,

You have two responses for instruction on subjects. You can also check out ABEKA, Bob Jones and ACE.

I forgot about the DIVE cds...those are good too. We used them for 7th and 8th grade but my son didn't want to continue with Saxon Math after that.

Saxon has good Algebra programs, and so does Math-U-See. You can get both on swap boards, or from the manufacturers.

A benefit about homeschooling is that you have lots of resources to teach the children. YOu do not have to know it all before teaching. You get to learn along with him. I am homeschooling my fifth, and still learning things!

    Yes, you can do it.

Another excellent program is Math-U-See.  It has an instructional video taught by a math teacher.  Then there are 2 workbooks, one for the student & one for the teacher.  We used MUS for our dd.  It was very helpful.  The instructions say for the teacher (usually mom) to view the video & then teach it to the student.  However most families let the student just watch the video.  My dd preferred it that way.  I think it helped her feel she was in a real classroom.  I believe the website is http://www.mathusee.com/.  There used to be some weakness in the program but in the years since we first started with it, about a dozen years ago, they have made a lot of strides to overcome those.  Mostly it was not enought practice drills but they've really increased that over the year.  Gotta love 'em for responding to what their customers need/want.

    Blessings,

I teach college biology and had a great student in my classes who taught science to a homeschool family.  You could contact the local Universities (UB, Buff State) to see if there is an advanced math major or grad student who wold like to make a few bucks.
