Yep, ordered three basic packages, no specials.   I've calculated that 3 packs will last us a month and maybe a little beyond with only a short trip to the store once or twice in the month for dairy, produce and a store sale or two.  Our A/F location has even been throwing bread in, an added bonus.  With just one basic package that we purchased for January's order, they gave us a sandwhich loaf of Wonder bread, a sandwich loaf of Great Value (WM/Sam's brand) whole wheat and a 24-pack of large hamburger buns that are marked, "Jack in the Box".  Wunnerful!

The Feb order, the small jar of p.b. is excellent quality and the jar's a neat size for re-use.  The split chicken breasts, if they're the same ones from Dec, are excellent as well.  The salisbury steak entree is one of the better ones; the lasagne was just 'okay'.  Dh loves the Philly steaks; the soup will get used up quickly as it's been so cold lately.  All the fruit and veggies, whatever their state, will be gobbled up.

What to do with the black-eyed peas, Brandy?  I make a bean salad over the summer that uses canned b/e peas, but I've not used dried before.  Bet you have some ideas...

I was wondering if any of our local grocery stores feel any pinch the week A/F is delivered?  It sure has cut down on my purchasing, I know.  Just curious...Liz

I don't get Angel Food here but I am curious after all these months of reading posts on how much you save overall.  Since prices for meat seem to vary so much across the country.  For example I can get very good ground beef for $2 lb most of the time. Even at the butchers, great quality lean beef or pork is maybe $3 a lb.  It seems that $1.99 is a very good price for most people on the forum for beef.

For example, what would it cost you at the store for the same items in your area?  plus the fact some things you wouldn't buy or are not that healthy.   I am curious thats all. I always look at package deals and calculate if it is worth it or not for me. For example, we really don't eat turkey so for me to buy one on sale for us it not worth it.

The meat specials are good prices for sure.  Reminds me that my favorite grocery store for meat specials is having a bogo on steaks, pork, chicken legs etc.  Have to check it out. love their marinated stuff. need a couple of pork roasts for the freezer.

Since internet went down as I was replying to you Liz, I am trying again.

I have been pleased with the peanut butter. I was worried the first time but they are a good addition to the packages.

If the lasagna is Banquet as the others have been then we are happy with that. It's not something I would buy regularly but my non-cooking teen can heat them and we all like them.

    Eat them?

Heh, I cook them like I would red or white beans but I don't cook them quite as long. I prefer to use onions, pepper, salt and parsley as seasoning but others like different things. The peas go very well with baked, roasted or fried chicken.

Re: February Cooking With Angel Food

     My Family's Interests,

I think being sure one is getting a good deal is very important so I am glad you raised this question. There are times that I have passed on ordering because it wasn't a good deal or contained too many convenience foods or items we did not eat.

If I were to purchase all these items myself locally, I would spend $43.87 with taxes. Angel food is $13.87 less for this package.

Here is the break down on the costs and I am using sale prices:

    $6.99 estimated- 1.25 lb. Sirloin Strip Steaks (4 x 5 oz)

$3    2 lb. Salisbury Steak Dinner Entrée

$1.99-   2 lb. Split Chicken Breasts

$5    2 lb. Breaded Chicken Breast Fillet

$3.89 a pound for pork    1.5 lb. Meaty Beef Ribs

    $1.29 per pound-    1.5 lb. Pork Chops (4 x 6 oz.)

$4    12 oz.  Philly Steak Portions

    $2.50    12 oz. Peanut Butter

???   4 oz.  Chicken Noodle Soup (makes 64 oz.)

$1.50     9 oz.  Frosted Corn Flakes

.99    16 oz. Frozen Fresh Corn

.99  16 oz.     Frozen Fresh Carrots

    $1.39    2 lb.     Fresh Onions

    $1.89    2 lb.     Fresh Potatoes

    $1    15 oz.   Sliced Pears

.69   1 lb.     Black Eyed Peas

Thanks for answering my question Brandy!  I am sure that others in higher cost areas are saving more.  I know some of those items would be more expensive here.

Re: February Cooking With Angel Food

One of the biggest savings i got from this was being able to stay out of the stores. When I was purchasing more boxes regularly, I didn't have to shop as much as it allowed me to stock foods for a month. There were no little extras being tossed into the cart.

Now that my food stock is down, I'd like to use it to achieve a well stocked pantry and freezer again.
