    Milk

     Hi,

Saw this website and figured I should post.  If your family is used to skim milk, buy a gallon of Vitamin D.  If you have an empty gallon that was previously used, pour 1/4 of the Vitamin D gallon into the empty jug and fill the rest with water.  You get 4 gallons of milk for the price of one.  It's actually a little better than skim milk.  I don't really like skim, but one part whole and 3 parts water tastes good...

Dear Burgewood, That's a GREAT idea -- only children under 2 or is it 3 should have whole milk, for their development.  All teh rest of us can either drink sohymilk (as I do) or follow your idea!  Yours in HIm, Deb

Thanks for the tip! We drink 2% but I might still be able to come up with a good blend.

This was such an issue for us. My youngest doesn't handle whole milk well. She was almost two and drinking formula to get what she needed. We tried evaporated milk then powdered after that.

Normally we drink 1% milk but usually have 2% cus of the kids.  Don't like skim but 1% works fine. In a year or so I will switch to 1% for the kids too when they are older.

    Re: Milk

Remember, you would be getting 1/4 f the calcium, protein, Vit D- the 4% is the milkfat, skim milk is 100% milk.  Nutritionally, milk is a good buy.  If you water it down, you are getting a 1/4 of a glass of milk.  Kids would need 8 of these to get two glasses of milk.  Adults would need 4 to get a glass.

My boss was just diagnosed with a severe Vit D deficiency- she eats cheese, not milk.  It has been gray and cold here for months, no Vit. D from the sun!

    Re: Milk

There are better, less expensive ways to incorporate Vit. D, calcium, etc. in your diet besides drinking numerous cups of milk.

Humans are the only mammals that continue to drink milk beyond infancy, and it's milk from antoher species, not even HUMAN milk.

The milk lobby in America is alive and well!

Vitamin D is also manufactured in the skin right after direct exposure to sunlight. Sunlight exposure to the hands, face and arms for as little as 5-15 minutes, 2-3 times per week is helpful to produce vitamin D.

Here is good link with info on Vit. D and calcium intake through many different food groups:

25"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? 26Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?

    Re: Milk

I just read that you can freeze milk.  I haven't tried it yet, but I never gave it a thought.  Apparently, it turns slightly yellow when frozen, but once thawed it looks normal.  It was checked out with the Dairy Association who said that yes, it is perfectly OK to freeze milk.  I only buy raw, organic milk from local farmers, so this is going to help me make less trips!  Just thought I'd pass along this information.
