    Grain Grinders / Flour Mills

What flour mill/grinder do you have and what do you like about it? Have you used any you wouldn't recommend?

And does anyone have the URL for a page which has excellent reviews of a range of mills... I used to have it and can't find it.

I'm coveting a Kitchenaid, but they are a whopping $650 ish AU before I even buy the mill attachment (another $150 or so no doubt). Also on my wishlist is the Champion juicer, which is the slow-auger type which has a grain mill option (though there's another non-grain-milling version which is a better juicer. And anyway I already have a juicer). Alternatively I'm looking at the Whispermill, or there was a lovely German wooden-housed one which was beautiful.

The Vita-Mix will both juice (the complete fruit or veggie, completely, giving you ALL the nutrients) & make ice-cream, soup, & anything in between cold & hot.  There is an inexpensive (relative to the Vita-Mix's price) add-on that gives you grain-mill capacity.

Here are two links.  The first is for a comparison on the various mills.  I have a whisper mill that I have used every week for 8 or 9 years.  I've had no complaints at all on its milling, but it is loud and some flour dust tends to escape through the top vent filter.  These are really no big deal to me though.  I use the mill with a Bosch Universal mixer to make fresh milled whole grain bread.  I have had the Bosch for the same length of time as the mill and I love it.  They are expensive kitchen tools, but I use them all the time, so I feel they are worthwhile and justified.  The second link is to a a company that I have purchased from before that sells both mills and Bosch mixers.

A Kitchenaid mixer for $650???? Holy cow, my Professional 600 is $350 retail new, and I got a used grain mill attachment for $90. I recommend buying direct from shopKitchenAid.com and then getting a refurbished model at that. The Professional model is about $250 then I believe. I don't know what the new retail for the grain mill is.

If you are looking at a food service commercial model, check the power output first. My Prof.600 is the same or higher wattage than the commercial model. What makes it for commercial applications is that the entire machine is stainless steel.

That's Australian dollars. They'd cost a lot to freight internationally, but with the current exchange rate, I'll have to check it out. I haven't looked at the vita-mix yet but that red Kitchenaid is just beautiful!!!!

I have a "Family Grain Mill"  from the Urban homemaker.  I like it because it can be both electric and hand cranked.  I also have a Bosch mixer that I use.

Now I'm feelin guilty for not making any bread for the last month or so. Embarrassed  I need a frugal jumpstart!

Thank you Pat. I was so excited to have found these forums and then I couldn't figure out how to post! My post said - basically, that even though I cook from scratch - A LOT. I don't rely too much on my Kitchen Aid or grain attachment. There are some kithen things I could not live without but that's probably another thread.

You're welcome. :) I think there's another thread around here somewhere about kitchen essentials. If you can't find it, start your own!
