I always thought WalMart would beat prices at the supermarket, but such is not the case (I guess they will if you go to them and say you've found it cheaper elsewhere?) Besides the paper twoels coasting 3 dolars more at WalMart than in the stores, I have found a lot of things more expensive at WalMart, and many advertised as "On Sale". I am on the watch now everywhere I shop.
Honestly, that's about the only way to shop anymore. Like you, I just don't assume that Wal-Mart has the lowest prices.
Budgetwise! "Remove far from me falsehood and lies; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is needful for me. Lest I be full and deny You and say, Who is the Lord? Or lest I be poor and steal, and so profane the name of my God." Prov. 30:8,9

Re: Careful about the WalMart-type stores' prices, too
I've seen that Wal-Mart will match competitors' prices as long as you have a written sales flyer (no computer printouts, from what I understand). However, you'd have to know what the prices were for Wal-Mart's items in the first place before you knew whether or not the competitors' prices were cheaper.
I've really tried to keep up with my price book so I can know what I'm paying at various stores. But with a teenager, a two-year old, an eleven month old, and DH who is in school full-time, I can't even keep up with the laundry!
Does anyone else here keep a CURRENT price book?

Here is the Dollar Stretcher link to a similar discussion that is from this past week: http://community.stretcher.com/forums/t/24457.aspx Walmart does not require a copy of a competitor's sales flyer per their website.
Here is an excerpt from the Walmart link that is at the bottom of my post: Our Ad Match Guarantee
We’re committed to providing low prices every day. On everything.
So if you find a lower advertised price on an identical product, tell
us and we’ll match it. Right at the register.
We gladly match the price in the following types of ads:* - Buy one, get one free ads with a specified price
- Example: Buy one for $2.49, get one free (BOGO)
- Competitors' ads that feature a specific item for a specified price.
- Preferred shopping card prices for specific items that are in a printed ad.
- For fresh produce and meat items when the price is offered in the same unit type (lb. for lb.; each for each)
*The following are guidelines and limitations: - We will match any local competitor's advertised price.
- We do not require customers to have the ad with them to honor a competitor's ad.
- Items purchased must be identical to the ad (size, quantity, brand, flavor, color, etc.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is an excerpt of the Price Match Guarentee. The website spells out exceptions/rules. Here is the website for all the details: http://walmartstores.com/10563.aspx
Re: Careful about the WalMart-type stores' prices, too
I am ashamed to admit that I have never been brave enough to say "that's BOBO @ Safeway right now..... can I have it for that price here?" but... maybe I'll try that the next time we go to WalMart. I have noticed out here that it seems like WalMart RAISES the price on items when other stores have it on sale?!?! Like, maybe to trick us into thinking "well it's on sale @ Raleys, so it must be cheaper here @ walmart?". Just odd!!!
Just odd!!! This is what I have noticed, what happened on the Bounty Towels when on sale at PC and Hannaford, WalMart raised their price then.
Re: Careful about the WalMart-type stores' prices, too
Rolo, thank you for this information. I don't know how useful it might be here, since the tiny WalMart carries very little in household goods or hardware and no fresh produce or meats, just frozen pizza-type things, cheeses and almost an entire wall of beer(!). I will watch out fot the sales at other stores, though, and go to WalMart.
