I prefer olive oil to baby oil as well. I had a small bottle I kept some in for my youngest when she was a baby. I also used actual cornstarch as powder...so now we have food as baby products.

Food as medicine- when my kids get an earache, I put a little olive oil in the ear, have them lay with that side up and put the heating pad on the lowest setting over that ear over a little washcloth, then I turn on a half hour TV show or movie, and tell them to lay still- it works about 60-70% of the time for pain relief.

I used to have a recipe for a homemade cough syrup using honey and lemon juice. It did work but I don't remember the mixture and sadly I lost the container I kept just for home remedies.

How is the olive oil helping the pain? That one is new to me... just curious of the remedy background.

Doctors are very reluctant to give an antibiotic for an ear ache nowadays, and most ear aches resolve on their own- I think the olive oil soothes the inflammation, and the heat speeds the healing- plus any psychological or placebo effect that the child feels from being taken care of and attended to, all I know is we have 7 kids and have gotten antibiotics for my oldest daughter for 3 ear aches, then she got tubes at age 3, and for the younger 6, I think we've treated ear infections with antibiotics about twice.  Maybe the heat is also just soothing enough the child will relax and healing also speeds up.  All I know is that my kids are much better usually, and we usually repeat it before they go to bed- it seems to help a lot.

LOL!  I never have apple cores in my house.  When I eat an apple, I eat seeds, core, & all -- the only left-over is teh stem!

There are mixed reviews on this practice, Deb...but be careful!!  Eatting apple seeds could be a problem.

    Tracy,

That is interesting. I will pass on to my friends who have children. Smile Thanks!

Speaking of food as baby products, I know someone who swears by pure vegetable Crisco shortening as a replacement for petroleum jelly when diapering. She uses the regular not the butter flavor.
