The most expensive home cooked dinner I ever made...

Yesterday, I resisted the temptation to pick up a fast food dinner for our family, deciding that it would have been cheaper to go home and prepare dinner!  The kids have been begging for fried fish, so I thought I'd surprise them.

Well...to cut a long story short, I had an accident with hot cooking oil.  I still can't tell you exactly what happened but just as I was about to fry the last 2 pieces, the hot oil splashed down my chest and along my left forearm (I was wearing a short sleeved v-neck top)   Thank God for the first aid training I received as a Girl Guide!   The first aid helped control the "damage" but I still had to go to the emergency room.   $150 later (not including the costs of the prescription)- my left arm is in a bandage, my chest looks like a giraffe, but I am really grateful that (a) the burns weren't worse and (b) that I didn't get the hot oil in my face too.

I have to go back for a follow up visit tomorrow to remove the dressing, check the arm etc. I have no idea how much that will cost.

As the credit card was being swiped at the ER,  DH commented "Wow!  Who would have thought that ten fish could cost so much money!"

It would have been a whole lot cheaper to buy the bucket of chicken at KFC!

I'm so sorry to hear about your accident. I've had close calls cooking with oil. When you put the situation those terms, KFC sounds like the better deal.

I am so sorry about your accident. I hope it is not too painful and that it heals quickly. I hate frying foods and ban everyone from going near the fryer when it is plugged in.

I have a fear of frying with oil--we sold the fryer before my oldest was born. I'm glad you are ok! KFC sounds like a good treat for tonight!

Poor you!  I hope it is not too bad and you aren't in that much pain!    I am not a fan of frying for that reason plus the smell.

OW! Hope you recover quickly. Hot oil is always something to be cautious with.

Thank you all for your well wishes and prayers.  It's not too painful, thank God.  I seem to experiencing an allergic reaction to something too - maybe one of the meds. In addition to the burns - I have a horribly itchy rash right across my torso.  It doesn't help that it feels like about 300 degrees outside today - it is unbearably hot.   It's going to be a bit immodest, but walking around the house in a bikini or in my underwear sounds really appealing just about now!

Did I mention that I had a photo shoot (promoting my crafts/ Christmas ornaments business) for a feature in a local magazine today?   Yup ...the bandage features prominently in every shot.  The poor photographer tried his best to get around the bandage, poor guy!  I can't wear anything with sleeves because it'll irritate the burns on my upper arm.  Apparently I'll be wearing V-necks for a while too!    Too close to the publication deadline to defer the photo shoot, but as my DH says, "who knows, maybe the bandage will get you some sympathy sales!"

Of course, if I was really manipulative, I could milk this for all its worth.  The girls refused to allow me into the kitchen this morning, and have already advised DH that we will be having take-out something or the other for dinner tonight.

I'm guessing that no-one in my family will be harassing me about fried fish for a long, long time!  LOL!

Thank you for yet another reminder of how dangerous cooking with oil can be. That cannot be emphasized enough. I hope you heal quickly with a minimum of discomfort.
