True sign of cold weather switching kids clothes

This last Sunday I spent the whole day taking the summer clothes out of my daughter and son's dresser.  Then I put all of their winter clothes in.  It really surprised me that I had enough clothes for both for the winter.  Most of the items were from thrift stores and rummage sales.  If anything was bought at a department store it was on clearance and no more that 3 dollars.  The only items they now need is underwear, shoes, socks and Natalie needs a belt and tights.  Now I just have to start collecting clothes for summer.

I did that slowly over the last month or so.  got them new winter boots since they needed them. Dug out winter coats, found mittens.  probably will need more but will wait and see.

all about layers here!  raincoats over sweaters..or vinyl lined coats with hoods at the moment. not cold enough but wet...always wet and windy alot in the winter.

don't mind the rain but cold rain and wind together nasty!

momma needs rubber boots for standing in the wet soccer fields!

It is getting down in the 30 at night and the forties in and fifties during the day.  So not to cold yet but will be soon, so out goes the shorts and short sleeved shirts in comes the pants and long sleeved shirts.

I went through clothes week before last to be sure we had what we needed to start winter. My kids both need a few things and one will likely outgrow what she has now before the cool weather passes.

I've changed out everyones summer things to the winter ones with the exception of DH.  He will help me do his stuff tomorrow.  We have everything that we should need for the winter.

I've changed out DD's clothes.  Many of her outfits we converted from spring/summer to fall/winter but putting a long sleeve shirt under a short sleeve tee.

I have most everything she needs except for an insulated hat and gloves and a pair of snow pants.  The snow pants I will probably get tomorrow.  There is a sale and I can get them for $10 if I get there early.  She just got a good set of hat and gloves that will work while it's cold but no snow, but she'll need a set for snow.  It may be a Christmas present.  Don't know yet.

I went through to see what I still need to get. The clothes my daughter is starting winter with are last years items that still fit. Some things are getting close to snug though and if she grows even a wee bit, they won't fit anymore. I have found in the past, it's better to buy several things in the next size now.

    Daughter needs

    • One size larger in pants, I think three jeans or khakis would do it
    • 3 cardigans or hoodies to replace those that are getting snug
    • Tights for wearing with skirts
    • Underwear
    • Shoes

My son doesn't everything he needs for winter yet either

    • 3 hoodies or something he can pullover t-shirts
    • 1 good pair of jeans
    • 1 pair slacks
    • 1 buttton down dress shirt
    • 3 pajama pants
    • Underwear
    • Shoes

I switched about a month ago b/c it got cool here earlier than usual. My youngest has everything he needs due to hand-me-downs. My oldest needed snow boots and snow pants and I found those at my favorite consignment shop. But like Brandy's child, he will outgrow some things before the winter season passes. He just turned 5 and his size 5 jeans are just the right size. Any growth spurts and they may become too short. Same with his long-sleeved shirts. I may go back to the consignment store and just grab a pair of size 6 jeans and a couple of size 6 long sleeved shirts. I know what gramma can buy my oldest for Christmas: size 6 clothing!

I need to ask some friends with young boys if they have snow boots. My youngest has boots but they are a size 10 and right now, he is an 8-8/12. My boots are size 7 and size 9-10. I had him try on the 9-10 size and he clomped right out of them. They are just pull-on and don't have velcro straps. Maybe he will have a growth spurt before we need boots here.

Re: True sign of cold weather switching kids clothes

I don't really take summer clothes out of the kids drawers. I will put away sandals, flipflops and light jackets to make space.  Same I will put away heavier sweaters and fleece, winter coats.   I put ds shorts in the top drawer out of sight so he won't wear them in the middle of winter!

I used to switch them out but too much trouble because lots of things here are year round wear.  In the summer we can't count on nice sunny weather all the time.

I just have to go though their bins and get out whatever winter stuff is there. I know dd has a fleece outfit down there.
