Clean out the cupboard & freezer & fridge Pantry Challenge Oct 13 to 20th,2009

Was packing up the baking/spices stuff from the wallunit we were using as temp cupboards and throwing out some things and rediscovering others...thought it would go with the no spend days.. A Clean out the cupboards challenge was needed to use up foodstuffs lurking about!

Dh put up the new to us cupboards.

Discovers jello, pie fillings, marshmellows, baking choc & chips, muffin mixes to use up! and that is one cupboard!

threw out one bag of hard marshmellows, old baking choc, old spices plus a big bag of way too hot chili powder!  in the ethic area you can get big bags of spices cheap..not the same chili powder I am used too!  was a life time supply.  plus a couple of travel mugs for thrift store.

what do you have lurking in the dark recesses of your fridge, fridge, pantry waiting to be used.....Devil

thinking of pumpkin muffins with butterscotch chips. have a can of pumpkin and the pioneer women just posted a new recipe.

I haven't started the cupboards yet; I did do the fridge however.  Over the weekend I made a batch of apple butter.  I sent three apples in with my DD for making applesauce this week.

In addition, yesterday DH ate the lost bowl of soup.  Then he and DS ate two pork chops with stuffing.  The girls and I ate the chicken and the rest of the stuffing with a salad.  The day before we ate up the leftovers from a breakfast casserole, and I ate the enchilada with refried beans.

Now we can concentrate on using up some of the other ingredients hiding in the dark!

tonight I have to do something with the defrosted cooked turkey!  not sure what yet.  and check the fresh pineapple I put in the fridge and forgot about! see if it is edible.

does remind me that I have to do something with the apples I picked on the weekend. not today though since I am working.

I need to do this in my baking, coffee, spices cupboards - esp with the upcoming holidays, etc it would be nice to know what i have and what I need (and what needs to be replaced as it's expired!)

The kids and I are going to bake this afternoon so that's a good reason to dig a little deeper into those cupboards - I'm in!

I started this challenge last week when a call came out in our community to help the local food bank. Last year I built up a stash but it became evident that while I was "prepared" with a variety of canned goods, most of it wasn't getting used. It felt really good to let it go to a better cause and not going to waste.

I clean out the panty too for the food bank. It goes feel good to give it away instead of wasting it.

ate the pineapple.  made turkey fajitas so used the cooked turkey and the discounted fajita kit last night. we ate out for dh birthday tonight

pulled out a pack of salami from the freezer for the guys lunches.  have been giving our student money and dh has been going though the kitchen getting lunches..frozen meals etc.  used the rest of the montery jack cheese. had to throw out one piece because of mold.

making a cheese and cracker platter for the brownie enrollment ceremony tomorrow nite.   ham plus homemade mac and cheese.  surprise dh because I don't make homemade mac and cheese much because the kids don't like it.

working my way though the ice cream Big Smile

need to go shopping tomorrow  no bread or milk left.
