    Cheapchic,

Lucky dog to have you come along and rescue. Do you have pet insurance?

You're honoring your Basset hound by being such a good person to these other creatures.

Any animal lover/rescuer has to be a really good person. Whoops, I didn't mean to brag about myself!

Measure the food out, don't free feed, so many people just dump food in a dish.

Also my Vet has told me to buy OTC people medicine for my dogs, asprine for when they got older and stiff, my pharmacist buys generic glucosimine (sp?) caplits because they are less expensive for her dogs, I always gave heartworm pills year round because they have to be tested before you give them again if you stop during the cooler season and the cost of the test was more then year round treatment.

I live in the NE and use pellets for my woodstove - they are around $5 for a 40# bag vs $25+ at the pet stores - and I don't notice a difference.  The used pellets then make great mulch for my flower beds (I wouldn't use it around veggies).

There aremany good tips here for saving money on meds and shots, thanks!   My dog Gigi is a Bichon Frise.  I save  $40.00+ every 8-10 weeks by learning to bathe and groom her myself.  I bought special shears and brushes and clippers, through an online discount pet supply, and borrowed a dvd from the library on pet grooming.  This saves me the trouble of having to drive her to the groomer and also it is less stressful for her too.

Get an enzyme toothpaste and learn to brush your cat's or dog's teeth. This will save on potential dental work and cleanings/scraping, which  here costs a good $300.00. And use Revolation or another tick/flea/heartworm preventative to save on having to deflea your house and your pets.

Dear All, When your pet has had one infection, buy holistic or other remedies to prevent a recurrence.  For Heart's ear yeast infection, I am using earwash daily as preventative of recurrence (I'm using NatureVet earwash with tea tree oil), & for her hot spot infection to improve healing, I'm using Vet's Best Hot Spot Spray.  Products like these cost MUCH MUCH lesss than vet visists!!!  Yours in Him, Deb

Years ago I had a very large Lab by the name of Joey.  Well, as Joey aged (14) he just wouldn't eat.  I tried every dog food on the market.  Nope. Wet, dry, gravies.....didn't matter.  I didn't want to try "people food"  because he had never had it, except when he "stole" it and then he usually would get sick and it would come out one end or the other.  He was old and the throwing up was so hard on him...........I took him to the vet and we ran alot of tests and of course they were negative.  The vet thought he was just old, but said that if I wanted to, that she would give me a recipe and that I could "cook" for him.  Would I cook for him?????  I would have walked through fire for my Joey!!!!!!  Well, I wanted to post the recipe to hopefully save someone a vet visit, but wasn't absolutely sure about the amounts, but I found the recipe on the following Humane Society website.  As you can see, they also use it to save puppies.  By the way, Joey loved it and lived another year.     http://www.washingtoncountyhumane.org/savapup.html
