The "cash for clunkers" idea has spread to mattresses, & many other goods

Dear All, Merchandisers have developed trade-in progrms  for mattresses & manyother types of goods.  See the NY TImes http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/24/garden/24clunkers.html?emc=tnt&tntemail0=y  Yours in Him, Deb

There's actually a small family owned furniture store around here that was doing it before the gov't got into the phrase. I'm not sure what they do with the old things but they don't care of the condition and don't need proof before they cash your purchase in (they do haul it away though, so that must be the proof). It's not a whole lot of $ towards the new stuff but it's something. ($50 for a recliner, $100 for dinette set... ) I think it's a good idea since a lot of people would just leave it out on the curb, especially if it gets recycled in some sort of way.

The local pool and spa dealership here is offering $1000 trade-in for a new spa. (Not that we could afford one, but it's nice to dream...) Wink

I wonder if maybe they had a resell shop with a different name.  You know the saying... one man's junk is another man's treasure.  Oftentimes the stuff being tossed isn't in horrible condition.

At one time, a new furniture store owner often would have a second used furniture store in poor neighborhoods or ghettos under a different name.

Sometimes the trade-ins are actually antiques of value.  I recall a know-it-all appliance store owner grousing about having to pick up heavy iceboxes in the older sections of his Appalachian city, when delivering refrigerators.  I let him know that those iceboxes are highly desirable vintage items with price tags as hefty as their weight.  It was sweet revenge for years of his denigration when he sighed and said that it had been over two years since his last one.  Might add that his business practices eventually lost him the store...

In many areas, it's illegal to sell used mattresses but it may be legal to recycle their components and sterilize the stuffing for insulation or other reuse.

I wonder how this will turn out.  It will be interesting to watch all these new programs come into play.

We went to a music store Saturday where they were having a Cash for Clinkers sale. You could trade in an old piano or keyboard for a discount on a new one. There is a mattress trade-in here as well.

???? I really don't get that maybe Im seeing things or not understanding I know that government is giving money for old cars that is what cindy is telling me that they are trying to get rid of old things I feel sorry for the really poor people giving up thier car yes the money is great but you also have to go to a car dealer and buy a car then the government gives the dealership the money while the poor person has to make time payments on the car they can't afford to get it out right plus if caught without car insurance is a 500.00 dollar fine I know Im one bad girl here, but the ideal for all old things why not give it to the thrift shops or people hold a sale to get money I said I don't get it or not understand it???
