Keeping records in order to reduce use

Dear All, I got the bright idea the other day of writing odwn how many cups fo coffee I am getting out of a jar of instant.  Then, I'll haave a benchmark from which I can try to improve, by reducign use.  (I'll also haave an idea fo how many jars I should hae iin the huose at one timie.)   Yours in Him, Deb

Deb - Last year when I first started building my stash of supplies, I did the same thing on laundry soaps/softener, trash bags etc. I wanted to know how long it would last. Obviously there are weeks when you will use an item more often than others buts its helpful to see how many uses you can get and how long it lasts.

I figured out I'm not very good at keeping a price book, so I've started writing the date I bought it, the date I open it, and amount on the container.  This tells me how long it has been since I bought it, how "fresh" it may be, and what price I'm trying to beat...I figure at some point I'll be better at the ide of a price book....we'll see.Big Smile

I do this with lots of things, too. Laundry detergent, dishwasher soap, shampoo, bleach, vinegar, paper clips (I was curious).

At work, I have been using the same box of No. 10 regular envelopes (500/box) for over 3 years. My box of staples has been around since Sept 2007.

After a while, I just know how long something lasts in our house or in my office.

I did this for the first time with liquid dish soap this year. I don't have a dishwasher so I do all my dishes by hand. I was really surprised to see that one large bottle lasted 7 months! I will see if I can stretch it to 8 months this time, though. I do it with laundry detergent and other dry goods, too, but it doesn't work too well for me with food items because I don't use any one thing very consistently.

i did this when i bought my frontloader washing machine 8 years ago, with liquid detergent.  i wrote the date on the bottle with sharpie.  imagine my surprise when it took 8 months to use up a big jug of tide!!!  i use regular detergent, not "special for frontloaders."  also, i label baking powder when i open it- don't use much, i figure it's gonna die from old age!
