I really don't know, but I can guarantee you it wasn't $1800! I don't even spend that much in a year now, but when I was feeding a family of 5, I might have spent $200 a month (remember prices were different back then).

I can't even imagine what they would be buying for that much money.

I have spent $1,200 but I was cooking for a total of nine people at the time. The additional four don't eat like us or have the same frugal ideas so I was buying a lot that we wouldn't normally get.

I wouldn't even know how to spend that much unless it was steak and lobster!  I think 5-600.00 a mth maybe was the most. That was because there was deals to stock up on so I spent less the next couple of months.

Well, you certainly know that they were not (1) using coupons, (2) sending in rebates, or (3) shopping loss-leaders!!

I hope that Gary's advice helped them.  I cannot even imagine spending that much money on groceries.  And they went to the store four times a week.  Seems a little excessive and as if they did not shop with a list.  I only go to the store once a week and have a running grocery list going from shopping trip to shopping trip.  Even if they only cut their bill by 2/3rds that is an extra $1,200 a month that they could use to pre-pay their mortgage or snowball a debt.

     WOW!  wow......

I cant remember what the biggest total was, but I can guarantee it has never topped $200!

I agree with 2catsmom that the family that spent $1,800/month's chief problem is their shopping so often.  The key to my being able to live on my Food Stamps ($155) is monthly shopping, so that I can tightly control how much I spend ...

With stocking up more food, I need to stop at stores less so I am also spending less.

Re: No Time To Cook = $1,800 a Month

Back in my pre-kid, double income days, my husband and I once spent $600 in a month on food, then proceeded to eat out almost all the time.  We had to throw food away.  I remember just being horrified at what we were doing--the terrible waste, when people were hungry.   We could "afford" it, but morally I had a real problem with what we were doing.  The next month was much better.  Now we feed four on $200-$300, depending on the month.
