    Re: potatos

A few years ago, I did blues, golds, and reds. I didn't do anything special other than give them lots of water. They were smaller that store-bought, but much creamier! (The temperatures store-bought potatoes are stored at in warehouses changes the starch structure, so they taste a bit different. Not bad, just different).

Also, if you're hoping to store them over the winter, don't wash them. They store much better unwashed (assuming you're in an area where leaving them in the ground isn't an option, of course).

    RAO:
I had some success last year growing potatoes over the winter by planting the tiny potatoes that were too small to eat.

That's a great idea. I have some very small ones from this year's harvest so I think I'll try that! How big were your pots? I don't have much space that gets sunshine, but I have a little.

I always grow potatoes from the grocery store. I use the ones that are already trying to sprout and there are always those in the spring, after a winter's storage. I make sure to get the ones from the US about in the same latitude as ours and I've had good luck with them so far. Of course, I'm famous (infamous?) for planting things from the grocery store!

I don't have a lot of space either - one south facing window that's about 4 feet across.  Put a shelf in front of it, so I got twice the space for pots. Used 12 inch pots.  the potatoes were leggier than they are during the summer.  I grew a small variety (some kind of blue potato).  Did not use any supplemental light.

Thanks, RAO. I have a shelf in front of a picture window on the west side. I might have to use supplemental light, but I have one I can prop above the plants, I think. If nothing else, they will be conversation pieces (in my living room). Smile

     RAO,

How deep were your pots? That sounds like something I'd like to try.

Thanks, everyone, for responding to my post about getting no potatoes. I finally did find some, not many. I think the problem (besides the car lot and rain) was the blight. It wasn't evident earlier, but when I went out one day, the plants were all infected.
