    Fall Planting

I know some things are meant to be planted in the fall. What are they?

In your area, I'm not sure. How long do the night temperatures stay above 60?

It depends on when fall comes in and winter heads out as to how long the cool and the cold seasons last.

Well, that doesn't give us much to go on. Smile

When the weather is cooler, plant lettuce, radishes, spinach, mustard, turnips, things like that. If you look on the seed package, it will tell you how long it takes a crop to mature. Some things take warm weather to finish up, like tomatoes and peppers, so they're not good to start right now in most areas. Other things nee a longer growing season than lettuce and greens but don't mind the cool, like potatoes and most root crops, although you might be able to grow beets right now.

I'll pass on the beets but we do eat lettuce, radish, spinach and turnips. I thought some of these were cool weather things but wasn't sure. I haven't put in the research in yet but I figured someone here could point me in the right direction for it.

I also have seeds put aside for sprouting later when I can't get fresh things for salad. My experiment with it turned out well and tasty but I think for cost factor, it's better to use fresh veggies in summer and hold the sprouting for winter.

I would also like to plant vegetables for the fall, but our fall is very cold, and I think I missed the planting dates for it already.

Sprouts are better in the winter, anyway!

You might get some lettuce or radishes or even a few greens if you plant right away. Things like that can stand a light frost.

I might go ahead and try it, would you plant from seed now or seedlings?  I'll have to clear a spot in the garden.

Seeds should have enough time to sprout. You can cover the plants if a heavy frost is predicted, too, to extend their lives.
