    Thanksgiving Holiday Box

I was wondering if anyone is planning on ordering the Thanksgiving holiday Box this year from Angel Food. If you are planning on ordering the box are you going to cook it for Thanksgiving or divide the box up and spread it out for several meals? I am planning on ordering the box myself. I think I will only order one but I also might change my mind and order two. I will cook it for Thanksgiving meal unless I go to my in laws instead. It looks like a good spread of food. Maybe what my grandmother would cook. Except we have a chicken instead of the turkey. what is every one thought on this holiday box.

    Re: Thanksgiving Holiday Box

I have a couple of questions.

Is a Perdue Roaster a turkey?  Embarrassed  I'm guessing it is because a 7 lb. chicken would be awful big! LOL!  But, is it a whole turkey or like a turkey loaf (sort of like luncheon meat).  A 7 lb. turkey would be perfect for us!

For those who bought the holiday boxes in previous year(s), was it good?

The price is good.  I priced the items and it would be just a few dollars more than what we'd pay for these items here (if the prices are the same as what I calculated today), but it was almost impossible last year to find a turkey under 10 lb!  Walmart didn't have any, neither did Krogers.  We finally found one at Food Fair (an off brand) and it was really good.  It would save a lot of time and gas money looking for a smaller turkey this year.

We would save the ham for Christmas or for New Year's day.   Depending on what the cranberries are--whole berries or more like the jellied cranberries, we might not use that up.  We tried cooking whole cranberries one year and nobody liked it with all those seeds and stick-like things (was that the skin or part of the seeds?).  And, we'd probably use half of each of the veggies, the rolls, gravy mix, and dessert.

The boxes would be delivered Nov. 21, I guess, at least for us, so that would be very convenient.  We may order one box.

Well, I may have found the answer about Perdue Roasters.  I think it may be chicken, the oven-ready roaster is pre-seasoned and in its own cooking bag, and the oven stuffer roaster, I guess is a stuffed pre-seasoned chicken.  Didn't find a turkey roaster.  if that's the case, then we won't be ordering a box.  Anyway, my sister said she probably wouldn't like the stuffing, as she likes mine.  Oh, well.

LindaC it is a chicken. I got the christmas box last year. It is a big chicken. Last year I took the plastic wrapping off and baked it. Most of the food I got last year was good.

    Re: Thanksgiving Holiday Box

My grocery store does free turkeys around the holidays, and while I never spend $300 out of pocket, it is calculated based on the shelf price not after coupons.  I get one turkey every year.

I have all the stuff to make a pumpkin pie except pie crust already on hand, and I can usually score veggies pretty cheaply whether it's the holidays or not.  I always make homemade rolls and cornbread stuffing.   think I can do a whole Thanksgiving dinner with appetizers and wine for less than $20, so I think we are going to sit the Thanksgiving box out.

Thanksgiving here is always the two of us, my best friend and her fiance, and some combination of 4-6 other friends.

I am planning to order since my husband is insisting on it.   Big Smile   He thinks I deserve a less tedious holiday with easier to prepare foods.

There is no way we would eat all of the foods in one meal. I think I would put the ham aside along with the green beans for another meal.

I think I may buy a turkey when the sales are good even if I don't cook it for Thanksgiving. The prices get low, making it a good buy for something different to eat.

Do you prefer baked to roasted? I was thinking of trying it with the bag as I like roast chicken but it difficult to make well.

    Re: Thanksgiving Holiday Box

My mother and I were discussing the prices of the food in the holiday box. She priced the items or similar items at the store when she went shopping and sent me her findings. She priced it by brand name and cheap/store brand just for comparison.

                                                                     Brand          Cheap
    3.5 frozen corn cobbetts                               3.79              0
    2 lbs frozen diced s. potatoes                          0                0
       yam patties    1 lb.   8 count                      2.19
    2 lbs frozen green beans                              4.18            3.58
    1 lb. frozen cranberries                                  0                 0
      can  1 lbs  cranberries                                 0               1.49
17 oz ready to cook corn bread dressing         0                 0
       2 box corn bread dressing   12 oz.             4.78            3.78
    8 ct. large dinner roll                                      0                0
       Brown & Serve  12 ct.                               2.69            1.29
    4,5  brown gravey mix                                  1.09              .50
    1 dessert pie or cake                                   8.00            8.00
    7 lb. roaster                                                  0                 0
baking hen at  99 cents lb.                       6.93
       regular chicken                                      10.43
    2.5 ham                                                       0                 0
       a 4 lb ham for 9.99                                  6.22

    brand   51.79       cheap    48.20

She may want to consider an Angel Food box for herself for the holidays. Our prices are fairly similar though I think I could snag a sale pie for less than what she has listed and I know I can get a few other things for less on sale here. I don't think I could beat the AF cost unless sales drop deeply for the holiday.
