In Canada basic medical is though the govt. We get paid though my husband's work as a benefit. We get extended medical (covers dentist, prescriptions extras etc) though his work for a low price.

My sons have state CHIP.  My husband and I pay out of pocket.  So far we are healthy and hope to continue that way.  I haven't taken any prescibed medication since I can remember (except at the hospital when giving birth).

Will anyone her vote for universal health care?

    Re: Health Coverage

I have experienced state run hospitals and clinics and I have nothing nice to think or say about them so I am wary of the government having too much control over medical facilities and medical care.

Brandy, I've never had the experience of using govt. insurance, clinics or hospitals, but I have to say it can't be any worse than the medical cartel we have in our locality.  We have one doctor who accepts insurance, but you cannot, and I do mean cannot, get an appointment there for at least 3 weeks, regardless of medical problem.  There is one other doctor who does not accept insurance, cash only.  If you have an emergency of any kind, our only option is to go to the ER at the hospital.  They do accept insurance......however, I for one will not abuse my insurance in that manner since it costs at least $1K per ER visit and more if they do any kind of tests.  In other words, if you have a sudden UTI, URI (which can and will go into pneumonia if untreated) you are SOL unless you are willing to sock it to your insurance company.  I shudder to think of the countless kids who go untreated in this little burg for want of medical care.
I might be wrong but I think that medical care should be a right, not an option.  The health of a country's citizenry should be uppermost in the minds of those in government.  Simple mathematics:  a sick citizen cannot work, if he cannot work, he cannot pay taxes.

    Re: Health Coverage

Patrink, my experience with government funded and sliding scale clinics may not be so for everyone but we would wait weeks to a month for an appointment, emergencies were seen at the hospital where people were taken on the basis of need (their weird version), treatment was given only when deemed necessary and was sometimes experimental.

The one thing I never felt was that medical care was a right or that I had a right to ask questions and demand service when I felt something was wrong. We were usually treated like we were burdens on society even when we were paying based on income at a sliding scale clinic.

    Brandy,

Being former military I am very cautious about goverment run health programs.I am thankful I had my daughter in a civilian hospital.

I carried the insurance while I was working. To continue the coverage it would be $803.00 per month. We are currently without.

I have paperwork for insurance through an independent trucking organization for $400.00 per month but I am waiting because the company my husband leases his services to is going to start providing coverage for owner operators and their families.

My doctor charges $60.00 per visit,so far I have not had trouble getting an appointment when I need to see him.And he has the largest sample closet I have ever seen.He is giving me sample packs of my antidepressents as he is weaning me off them This help alot because they are expensive.

    Re: Health Coverage

Kimmary, my Father gets some of his medical care from a VA hospital, it never ceases to amaze me how long he has to wait and how long it takes them to find what's wrong. That is a sorry thank you to all the men and women who have served our country.

We have dealt with private doctors and cash/Medicaid for the kids or insurance for the past few years. This has been by far a better experience. We have gotten faster and better care and sometimes that's just sad because the better care pales in comparison to what I have read about other states/towns. I may one day emotionally get over some of my experiences with the government funded system.
