    Tomatoes

I didn't get my tomato plants. I didn't get my act together and I missed out on buying the plants for sale.

Everyone I know is having their tomato plants die because of some blight. Normally the people at the beauty shop have lots of tomatoes, but this year they don't have any.

Ours seem to be fine so far, but I am in Utah. It might be all the rain you have had back east.

    Re: Tomatoes

I usually have all sorts of problems with our tomatoes, which is unfortunate because they are my FAVORITE veggie. But this year was the best tomato year EVER, with no disease or blight at all. We're still getting a few tomatoes even now (we live in California).

Don't forget your tomatoes next year!

    Re: Tomatoes

I had a major crop of tomatoes this year here in So. Calif., much more than we could eat from six plants. I had 4 heirloom plants and 2 hybrid plants. Two of the heirlooms didn't do all that well. One barely grew over 2 ft., and produced few tomatoes. Another produced a few massive-sized tomatoes but they split, then spoiled before fully ripening. A small yellow pear heirloom did well and so did a San Marsano heirloom roma tomato. The other 2 plants were a Cherry Express hybrid and they also did very well. I had all these plants situated next to a stucco wall that got morning sun and afternoon shade and in this situation did better than on the other side of the yard.

I was working with a new yard at our new house so I did one heirloom in a pot and one in the ground where I thought there could be enough sun. The plant in the pot did ok but didn't have enough room to fully so wasn't a great producer. My other plant thrived and I still have tomatoes coming. I planted it near an old compost pile and it is 4x the size of my plant in the pot. I had to stake it two different times. I know next year that I don't need the pot and my spot in the yard gets plenty of sun.

My dad had some blight issues but had a great crop of tomatoes this year--roma and big boy. My leaves and plants look just fine. We've had a cooler summer than usual but maybe I was just lucky.

VNW, we planted tomatoes, and had no blight; but, the harvest has been awful. We have a ton of green tomatoes still on the vine, and the ones we did harvest didn't have nearly the flavor they usually do. There just wasn't enough heat.

    Re: Tomatoes

I didn't have blight either, but my tomatoes were very slow to ripen this year. Some of them rotted on the vine before ripening and some of them got bug eaten (slugs and pill bugs, mostly). I pulled them last weekend and gave up. I got enough to can quite a few, though, and they tasted great.

Lost mine to the blight. Got a few tomatoes before the blight hit. The only thing that survived was two cherry tomato plants. They were given to me. I think they are the Sweet One Hundreds. I bought 20 lbs this weekend for $16. I am canning them. Babs

Mine were slow to get going, but are just now hitting their stride.  Of course, tomorrow night is supposed to be a freeze, so it will be a short "stride".  I will pick everything with any color on it tomorrow am, & cover the plants, but we are supposed to get strong winds.  We will see if the covers stay put or not. I had several grape tomato plants that have been great for production & 4 or 5 early girl plants that have just started to ripen the tomatoes a couple weeks ago. The early girls are still loaded with green fruits. I may pick a 5 gallon bucket full to see if theyw ill ripen if I put them with some that are already red & let the ethylene gas work on them. Big Smile
