I agree Pat, always interesting to learn about other peoples beliefs. My stepdaughter just moved back home recently (todayIndifferent) and she is Buddhist , I am trying to understand all this entails, we are not, so it is a learning curve.

Dear Happy, You'llll probably have some vegetarian cooking in your future, if she is a practicign Buddhist, so far as I understand it, & she may be extra-careful about shoooing flies outdoors iinstead of killing them.  This is my understanding as a resident of San Francisco, where we have a number of saffron/gold-clothed Buddhist monks, & many adherentsof the Buddhist faith.  She also would, I belllieve, find meditation iimportant.  Yours in Him, Deb

Thanks Deb we are enjoying having her here.

Meditation is a large part of her day and so far that has been one of our major challenges, our house is not condusive to quiet.

For now she has taken over space in the garage for her meditating, much to her fathers dismay!

The next few weeks will be spent sorting out all the logistics.

Dear Happy, Do you have a park with a fountain nearby?  It would seem more conducive to calm than her Dad's garage!  Possibly you could encourage her to meditate there ....  Yours in Him, Deb

No... no parks we are in a rural area.

Surprisingly the garage is the quietest place, now I know why her dad spends so much time out there LOL

She does have a CD player and all required items set up so she seems to be getting along fine.

Thanks for the suggestion and sorry I didnt mean to divert from the original postZip it!

I'm completely happy with this thread going wherever it needs to go! I have loads of Jew-Bu (Jewish Buddhist) friends. I live within an hour of Naropa University.

I'm also a many, many years vegetarian and have a grounding in Eastern religious thought. I spent some time with the Hare Krsna movement (ISKCON). THat's where I learned veg cooking to start.

Happy, if you need any help whatsoever, just ask!

One of my joys with this new kitchen will be the fact that it is also vegetarian.

A blowtorch to kasher with?  Holy crow.   I think I would have burned my kitchen down (I'm a klutz!)

I love learning more about different religions, thank you, ladies!

(Here's a piece in exchange; a lot of fires that my people (pagan) light are sacred; they are lit for ritual purposes and need to be kept clean.  They can be used for cooking, which is in keeping with being respectful, but not for waste disposal--things put into them must be only done mindfully, so wood, herbs, etc.  I still (unfortunately) smoke--trying to kick it-- and as a result when at a cookout with a bonfire, ALWAYS ask if it's ok to dispose of the butts in the fire.   I get a lot of funny looks.  Smile  I live in a very rural area, so we do burn yard trash, but for holiday fires, we use wood from the wood pile.)

    Thank you very much truepeacenik!

My poor DH almost fell over when she said she didn't eat meat. He's a farm boy very meat & potatoes.

My concern is how healthy her diet is, she also believes in buying/using/consuming minimal amounts of food so as not to waste the worlds resources.

I am heading to the library today to get a vegetarian cookbook I dont believe she eats enough but then I have always fed farm men/boys.

They tend to eat like they will never be fed again.

Would there be any religious oposition to supplements?
