new apartment, new kitchen to kasher

I chatted with my rabbi yesterday and he went over what I'll need to do.

Looks like a few hours hard work.

I have a self-cleaning oven, so that part is hands off. A flat-top stove, so heat up burners for 30 min on high, cool, and pour hot water on it.

Boiling water in the stainless steel sink. New shelf paper after cleaning cabinets, and clean the refrigerator.

Pretty simple, and this is a Chabad rabbi's strictness.

I'm treating myself to new dishes.

I officially move Sept 1, so I don't know how consistent my Web presence will be that week. My landlord is allowing me the weekend before as well.

It's just me in the apartment after my son leaves on Sept 20.

It's really exciting to have a place that is all mine.

Dear Truepeacenik, WOW!  Are you  lucky to have that kind of stove, to make kashering such a cinch, no blow-torches!  Love in Him, Deb

yes, yes I am. It was part of the reason I selected the place: ease of kashering-rekashering in case of guest goofs.

    on blow torches:

one Pesach I didn't have all my hair tied back well enough.

Now, I have a LOT of hair, beyond my waist and at my fanny/leg crease. that's a lot of random fly away hairs. then, it was probably waist length.

A lock almost two inches wide got torched! Surprise

So yes, the apartment is a find.

I joked that such accidents are why the haredi crop their hair short after marriage!

Now, Truepeacenik, we can't Tribe our posts like that, without explanation, plese.  The haredi are ultra-Orthodox people, & some of them believe that simply coverign their heads with a hat or scarf is not sufficient for a married woman to show her modesty.  They shave their heads bald instead, & THEN put a scarf over.  Love in Him, Deb

oh, righto, I forget our Gentile sistren are here. My brain-dead apologies, All.

But Deb speaks true, the haredi (lit. trembling, as in trembling before the awesome power of Ha Shem) have very short to bald heads under their scarf or wig.

Many of my fellow Chabad (a particular organization) women have pixies and wear cloche-type hats. Many look very stylish, in a Clara Bow sort of way.

Me? I'm a scruffy hippie so I have to contain my hair for services. I have noticed few of our shul (lit. school, used as synagogue) wear hats. It seems to be more common at teh Russian shul and the other Denver location. I'm in a more relaxed burb. There are women who will wear trousers to shul, and short sleeves. We have no official ruling, but it is expected we will dress modestly.

Dear All, And thereein goes a tale.  I am very observant of the ethical precepts of Torah Judaism, but not very observant at all of the "we-doon't-know-why-Hashem-so-commanded-us" ones.  Examples of the laws I do obey are NEVER to go into a store & speak to a clerk unless I am willing to buy (no window-shopping INSIDE a store), & NEVER to wear pants (men's clothing -- no cross-dressing allowed).  I also NEVER wear short sleeves, but that is not for modesty (only wearing skirts, & longer ones, is for modesssty, too), but rather to cover my burns & protect them from the sun.  SO, that doesn't count!  Yours in Him, Deb
