of course he graduated from the Uni of Colorado! Stick out tongue

I respect the cave dwellers I know here in Colorado. Love to try it for a season.

Don't know if I'd do it in such true desert. But the Colorado River is close by, running through Moab and Canyonlands NP. he could fish, but seems to scavenge instead.

Now I'm a huge Ed Abbey fan, and I think our Ed would have loved this guy, who loves the land.

    anyone have his blog address?

and for those who are not into the cave dwelling aspect, but more sustainable:

this guy is hilarious. I actually bought Farewell My Subaru (and I hide it from my Suby's "view") and loved it.

    Re: being broke on purpose

As I'm reading this post, I'm sitting in "my" house (mortgage), warm and comfortable in pajamas and slippers, with electricity and the Internet, and I'm watching homeless people make their way down the street on their daily rounds out of the shelter and towards downtown. Sometimes I think it would be nice not to have to deal with money -- but what I would want is my current comfortable life, just without the hassles of having to deal with money. I would not want to be homeless or living outside, carrying my belongings around with me. Especially in these cold New England winters and hot New England summers -- not any time.

I don't think the guy is a drain on society at all, and I don't mind using "my" tax dollars for the community -- I don't have kids, but the majority of "my" property taxes go towards the public school system. I am happy that people who need it get health care and help from tax-funded programs. If this guy is happy doing his thing, God bless him. And if he's able to survive on society's leftovers and the kindness of friends, then good for him. I'll keep on working and living in my house. I think he and I would be equally unhappy trading spaces!

I could have missed it, but what is this man doing for others? Living a life where mice crawl over me as I sleep makes me useful to no one. Earning money is not synonymous with materialism. Helping others is Jesus' command.

Many of us help others, and we are the most generous nation in the world.

Oh, yes, we do and we are. But many of us are not. I don't think it matters whether we live in caves or in McMansions - what matters is our own attitudes. It's an individual thing that has nothing to do with circumstances  - that was my point.

Some feel that you can be most useful just by taking care of yourself and not being a burden to others. If this is all this man can do, or handle at the time, then that is what is right for him. Sometimes the stress and hustle/bustle of ordinary life is highly difficult, and some will tend to withdraw because of it.  I see nothing wrong with that. Edey

What does the man contribute to society? Perhaps I missed something. When he is ill or dies, who will pay? Not him.
