Michigan's Unemployment is 15.2% and no end in sight

    http://www.cnbc.com/id/31964372

" Michigan had the highest rate—15.2-percent—becoming the first state in 25 years to break that level. (West Virginia was the last in 1984.)

“Right sizing the auto sector and its impact on manufacturing jobs have pushed Michigan's rate near levels it hasn't seen since 1982,” said Waclawek. The state reached a historical high in November 1982 when unemployment hit 16.9 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

No other state came close to matching Michigan's level, even if they were well above the national rate. "

Makes me envious of those other states that are pulling out of this recession. Michigan was first to go in, and now last to leave the recession. No wonder dh's job is still week-by-week security. I'm ready to head south...... to warmer climates, longer growing seasons, and steady employment.........!

Today on our local news they posted the unemployment to be 10.1% but we do have the warmer weather and the longer growing season so if you and your family wish just come on down south.  Maybe the unemployment rate is the reason I see so many homes for sale in Michigan on e-bay.

I wouldn't say employment here is really steady but nowhere near what your state is experiencing. I hope things improve soon.

I live in the south.  Our state unemployment rate is at 11%.  The county I live in is at 12%.  There are no jobs and the people who have jobs really dont' have that much security.  It used to be that in this town if you got laid off from work in the morning you could have another job by the afternoon but not anymore.

It's been a mass exodus out of Michigan for the past couple of years. The joke is, 'the last one out of Michigan, turn off the lights.' many have gone to Colorado and South dakota, but now those jobs are filled. then it was Florida, but those went fast, and FL has it's own economic woes. Last i heard was the southern states were doing well for construction related work.

I just dread the thought of snow and cold again. My garden is about 3 weeks behind with the constant cold fronts that keep coming in this year. It's mid July and we've only been to the beach once. My goats keep thinking it's falltime and go into heat. Everything is confused!

Sorry it's so tough there . . . not much better here either!  11.6% for CA, our county is 15.4%.  Really awful, very few jobs available, lots of layoffs still happening.  I know so many people that are either facing furlough, already furloughed or on partial furlough (hours cut).

Really tough market still here right now.  Foreclosures and short sales still very common, tons of bankruptcies being filed.  Very difficult for a lot of people, I think we too will be one of the last to come out of the recession . . . but I'm glad that other states are starting to pull out-if they start the trend, maybe the rest of us will start to follow slowly!

We do have the warmer weather and longer growing season though!  Cost of living is still astronomical!

Our area started to feel the recession at the beginning of summer or so. The 6% our state is showing is up from where we were in January.

If the case is that some states are just lagging way behind, that may not be proof of pulling out of a recession.

I'm in Ohio, and my garden is behind too. It's just been a weird summer; I don't think I've ever seen one this cool before. I'm worried about heating costs this winter; as I'm tending to lean toward this cooler trend going well into winter, with temps being well below normal Dec-Feb!! Everyone else seems to think "cooler summer = warmer winter" but I guess only time will tell.

As of June, Ohio's unemployment rate is 11.1%. The county I live in, the most recent info I could find was for May 2009, and it's rate was 10.7%, although I'm sure it's increased some. It's just bad all over, and we just all need to stick together, and help each out in any way we can. You know, like it used to be, when neighbors & friends actually looked out for each other, instead of trying to out do, one up, etc. each other.
