Hello, every good person here,

I've been aked to make a rock to go on a float for a parade. The theme of the float will be revolutionary solders in a field.

They told me the rock should be about 2 ft. high and 3 around. Paper mache is to time-consuming, and I never did it anyway. My thought was to bend some chicken wire into a rock shape (what is that?) and cover it with newspaper and spray-paint it gray.

Can anyone advise me on this? Should I use straight grey or try to put other colors on it? The rock will only be seen from the street, so doesn't have to be an accurate representation.

hope you use wood also may help when it came to art I flunked so try looking at your state pictures of mountains or hills that may inspore  you maybe alittle...

grey with some touches of black maybe?    or you can cut one out of styrofoam and spraypaint it. that is what they do for movies.

I don't know if this is helpful to you but it may give you some direction.

If all else fails,  they sell fake rocks at lowes.  good luck

Me being craft-handicapped, the first thought I had was throwing some kind of grey/black blanket or tarp over a pile of something.

If you go for the styrofoam rock, you can use an electric knife to shape and form it before painting.  Liz. 

 Thanks, everyone. I looked at the styrofoam instructions - too complicated for me (I can work with wood and metal, but when it comes to something I can't build, I am not too god at it).

I had a thought I am going to try. I'll take some chicken wire with me a find a real rock, form the wire over it, cover that with newspaper and spray paint. The blanket or tarp might work, too.
