Im relatively new, but have introduced myself in the introduction forum, so I guess I can post Embarrassed I just wanted to say Cinnamonhuskies (pretty name!) we live in the 21 percent county or one of them. .. It is honestly scary here right now. I am fortunate that my dh is still working, but all of my family members have been laid off / let go.. and it seems to me, that the worse the economy gets here in our county, the more desperate everyone is getting too. We have had a rash of break-ins etc. and we live very rurally and never have to deal with those kind of things. Even our freecycle group breaks my heart right now, because it is just people posting wanted ads looking for food. We try to help, but now with my mom losing her job and things, we have to give to family first. I  just pray that somehow things get better.

18% in our county--one of the highest in the state.  For now, all family members are still blessed with a job but we are crunching the numbers to see where we stand if one should lose a job.  Scary!

Hi! Yes, the country is in a real mess & I only expect it to get worse. Actually, the unemployment rates are much higher than they report as they  don't include people who have reached maximum unemployment benefits & no longer get it or people who have given up even searching for work & several other factors that they don't count. I  live in Ohio & counties have laid off county govt. workers & put some courthouses down to being open 4 days a week. The towns & cities have laid off police, fire fighters, parks workers etc.My son, 18 has put in applications all over the place & not one return call or e-mail. Even McDonald's or Wal mart aren't calling. We just all have to look out for others who are having a hard time & help each other. My husband is still working , but 2 of his cousins are laid off permanent& lots of others too.

Sad  I just breaks your heart ro read about how bad things are.  I have family members and close friends who will be running out of unemployment benefits.  We contribute to the local food pantry and try to help out our family & friends as best we can.  Be diligent about not wasting food or money and conserve where we can. Pray.

Yes, this is very scary. Around here, the food banks are overwhelmed with lines of people where there were only the very poor at one time.

The break-ins and increase in crime in general has been a concern of mine for a long time now. Poverty breeds these things, fear breeds. Drug pushing is more popular than ever.

I looked the sale flyer for Price Chopper today, and several more price have gone up since last week. Of course they are advertised as "on special" the minute they go up, for they have raised the price even more. For example, their house cottage cheese, one $1.50 not so long ago, went up to $1.79. This week, it's "on special" for 1$1.89. "On special",. because they seem to have raised their regular price to $2.29. If I saw it right, that's a 40c increase, as it is in so many cases.

I don't see things getting better fast. We still have a very long way to go to be as deprived as much of the rest of the world, but we are going to have to adjust to an entire new way of life.

I read more and more about frugality being "the new thing." I guess we're lucky to have been practicing our "old thing" already. But we have to tighten our belts even more.

We can do that, though, and the lesson that happiness has nothing to do with money comes home again. ( Being in poverty creates misery, though).
