Generous food donations from Jewish Family & Children's Services, San Francisco
Dear All, I'm starting a thread, as I want to share with you the largesse of JFCS, San Francisco, CA. Instead of having to use taxpayers' money from SNAP/Food Stamps, I am receiving wonderful charity from JFCS. I posted last Wednesday's food in another thread, but I want you to be able to find all the gifts here. (I still have some SNAP/Food Stamps left, & post my use of that on Frugal Food & Cooking/Food Stamps.)
I received JFCS food for quite some time before I decided to keep a strictly Kosher kitchen, which meant going off it. I appllied for & received Food Stamps (before they were called SNAP). On the day that I received the 1st JFCS deelivery now (6/10/09), I notified SNAP Food Stamps of the exact food that had been delivered & that I can expect from Chicken Soupers. A certified letter arrived while I was out this AM from their zip code; we can't pick it up till tooomorrow. Since they certified it, I expect that it is a termination letter. Due to my very high medical expenses (abotu $650/mo), I feel entitled to about $25/mo of SNAP Food Stamps for filling in, & will appeal.
Every Wednesday, they deliver via another charity called Project Open Hand that serves people with disabilities, seven frozen entrees (I get vegetarian.). They also deliver a "produce bag," which can vary in contents' quantity depending on the economy. (QUANTITY, not *quality*, QUANTITY it is.) Last week, there was a large artichoke, 2 huge summer squash, 3 baby eggplants, & a bunch of asparagus in the produce bag, in addition to English muffins, soymilk, & chicken soup.
Twice a month on Sundays, starting this Sunday (Father's Day), they deliver via an JFCS project called Chicken Soupers 2 very large entrees (one chicken), 2 quarts of soup (one chicken), salads, & a bag full of goodies.
This is what I got today:
Frozen entrees via Project Open Hand: Tex-Mex style tofu mixed veggie frittata spinach tortelllini with Alfredo sauce black bean & corn chili with Cheddar cheese Tandoori tofu grilled tofu with tomato salsa 3-cheese quiche The produce bag had a Braeburn apple (my favorite!), Thomas' sourdough English muffins (love 'em!), 2 6-oz strawberry organic yoghurts, & a 15-oz can of black beans. That's fabulous! I'm sorry about the SNAP issue, but it's fabulous what you're able to get from POH! I'm sure it takes a lot of worry off your mind!

You're too sweeet, Toni! I wasn't praying for teh donations, I just pray for my health....
BTW, I always wwrite thanks to JFCS & mention all that I have received. Anne Cliatt, the Food Services Director, just emailed me & said that she was glad that I had told her what I received because the delivery person had given me the wrong produce bag, not the one that she had prepared for me. SO the delllivery person is bringing a SECOND bag at 12:30 tomorrow, after I get hoome from my appt with my personal physician, Peter. Can you imagine the generosity, kindness, heart?!!!

Re: Generous food donations from Jewish Family & Children's Services, San Francisco
I was hoping you would have some aide time and could make a delicious black bean soup with the canned beans for a lunch or dinner. Sounds like all wonderful food. I hope you still get about $75 SNAP for two beverages a day, and $25 for extra food for breakfast, yogurt and cereal, those are items I know you like. I am hoping you will still be able to get $100 a month in SNAP. God is good! The prepared food is just what you need right now. By the way, I got little single serve envelopes, if that's what you would call it, of Propel Fitness Water, to make in my water bottle for school. I also thought it would be good for the kids to take when they are in a different city, where the water tastes different. Would Propel meet your needs for electrolytes? I know it was pretty frugal, for a drink. It tastes like weak Koolaid, to be honest.

Dear Tracy, I make hummus of all types of beans alll the time. That is my favorite food, & I always keep lots of pita in the house. I'll use teh black beans for that.
The electrolyte drink that I use has: monopotassium phosphate, glucose, sodium cchloride, Vitamin C, beta carotene, calcium lactate, dimagnesium phosphate, niacin, & Vitamisn B6 & B12. Please cjheck the label on teh Propel Fittness Water for me & let me know the price if all the electrolytes are there. TIA, very much!

Dear Tracy, I make hummus out of chickpeas, but also out of black beans & most other kinds of beans. Its my favorite food, & I always have plenty of pita bread in the house to accompany it.
Please look at the Propel ingredients & let me know what they are. At a minimum, I need phosophrous, potassium, & magnesium. TIA! Very much!
Love in Him, Deb

The box of Propel Fit Powder I have contains: sucrose (sugar), citric acid, natural flavors, sodium citrate, potassium citrate, sucralose, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), calcium silicate, niacinamide (vitamin B3), calcium disodium EDTA, calcium pantothenate (vitamin B5), pyridoxine hydrocloride (vitamin B6), acesulfame potassium, vitamin B12. It comes in little single-serve tubes like the Crystal Light packets. There are 10 packets in a box and it comes in different flavors.

Jill- Thanks! Do you agree with me the little packets seem pretty reasonable? I don't know if it will work for Deb, but it might. They are very convenient, I must say.
