This thread brings back some memories.
My mother had one of the mini chests; she got it when she graduated in 1954. I used to love looking through it at all her little treasures and keepsakes. I didn't get one when I graduated in 1976, but about ten years later, my husband happened upon a sale at the furniture store, of Lane cedar chests. He bought one for me, one for my mom, and one extra just because the price was so good (and that was back when we had no kids yet, no bills, and no worries about money) and he knew we could find a use for it sometime (it's now my daughter's). As well, they were giving away the mini chests, and he got one for me, not knowing that I'd always wanted one. I use it for the same sorts of things my mother still uses hers--the little things that mean so much.
