I Got The Electric Bill Down

I finally got the electric bill under $200.00 ! That may not sound like much of an achievement to you, but it is for me. This house is big and I was washing and drying 6 loads of Mom's clothes a week.

The nursing home does Mom's clothes now.

Wow Linda. That's a lot! Surprise

My goal for summer bill: less than $50. Normally I pay about $70 for the summer when I have the A/C on. I plan on using fans a lot more than I have. My place is about 1200sq ft and 2 floors (plus basement).  My gas and electric are on one bill so that will be stretching it.

My gas and electric are separate. When I run the heat at 68 degrees in winter, my gas bill is about $85. The only gas appliances we have are the furnace and the water heater

When I run the A/C at 78 degrees in summer, my electric bill runs about $125. The highest we've ever had was $165. My menopausal MIL was visiting, and complained that she was hot, so we put it down to 73 for her.

My home is 1400 sq. ft. One floor, no basement.

Mine was lower this month too and I was thrilled.    It was 125 last month and 108 this month (145 the previous month).   I have been using the clothesline almost exclusively, been vigilant about the lights and have the tv's, etc on power strips.   I've also been powering down my PC at night.  The longer daylight hours help with lighting and with the tv not being on as the kids are all outside.

I need to replace my fridge soon so hopefully that will help as well even more as mine is old and in-efficient.

It is hard to get an electric bill lower in Virginia because Dominion Virginia Power is always or so it seems finding a new fee to tack onto the monthly bills.

Does the fact that Virginia is a commonwealth and not a state have anything to do with why things seem to cost so much there? I was just thinking, Massachusetts is the only other commonwealth, and it's expensive there.

Or is it just the way things are?

I believe that Kentucky and PA are commonwealths.

    Unfortunately, it is expensive everywhere.

I did it!  The bill I just got in the mail was $40.17! I did run the A/C one day but I think I offset that by turning off the power strips while I was gone for 5 days (had to reset vcr clock and wait for the cable box to reset, but small price). Very little phantom/vampire power going out.
