Re: "Luxury" groceries not covered under SNAP after a week or so!
That is why I've appealed, dear Brandy. SNAP should not have refused to pay my bill in total! And, I was entirely ignorant of the fact that rotisserie chickens were not covered; SNAP should have had a mechanism of paying the rest of the bill & notifying me of the balance due if I wanted to purchase the chicken.
I was so afraid after that of using the EBT card that I just racked everything up on VISA. As ALWAYS, I paid off the VISA bill early, in this case just a week early (but at the issuing bank, so the payment was credited immediately), but I had to use up my entire $250 stimulus check [some of the bill was for my ISP & household goods], whereas, if I had been able to use my Food Stamps, I would have had frequent signals of how fast I was racking up the bill. (VISA's running total can be found on the computer, of course, but it is much harder to read than are CRT's. AND I am no less susceptible to over-spendign when I am "putting it on the plastic" than the next person!)

Deb, I'll be praying that they reimburse you or at least apologize for the inconvenience! LL

Dear Swedluv, I suppose the chicken must have been hot, since the rule seems to be that hot rotisserie chicken is not covered. Honestly, though, I thought that I was buying previously-roasted, cooled chicken. Anyhow, the odd thing in what you say is that San Francisco has a program for cash recipients of Care, Not Cash to use program cash in restaurants, LOL .... (You don't know what to believe these days!) Yours in Him, Deb

I can imagine it was an embarassing situation for you. It wasn't your fault though. In future don't pull out your credit card though, it's worth trying the EBT.

Re: "Luxury" groceries not covered under SNAP after a week or so!
Deb, when I first got SNAP, I went into Whole Foods to find out their policy on hot foods because there are some supermarkets here that allow them. The customer service desk person told me that there is a heat sensor on the scales and that some people try to cheat them by putting in lettuce and cold salad, then a layer of hot food and then a layer of cold on top to mask the hot food, LOL.
I wonder if there really is a heat sensor..if there is, it wouldn't be there because of food stamp people but rather to keep some kind of record, I imagine. I'm going to ask again. As far as what you said about the chicken being cooled...here the cooked chickens are in a plastic container and hot. I haven't seen them chilled where the sandwiches and chicken parmigian and other cooled off cooked meals are. I still have a feeling that the chicken was the reason but of course, the larger issue is the non-acceptance of your WHOLE order. BTW, I got a really neat soap there today, the 365 brand chamomile glycerine. It smells like orange but not strong, really nice. I love that store! I wonder if you have a Trader Joe's there. I ask because ours has a kosher meat department (if you keep kosher) and they are cheaper than most stores.

Yes, Brandy, you are right! Fortunately, I have not created any debt (ie, I have paid off what is due before the end of the grace period). BUT I surely spent more than I would have had I used the SNAP EBT, so you are right indeed! Love in Him, Deb

Re: "Luxury" groceries not covered under SNAP after a week or so!
Dear Susie, I do (when I can, not at the mooment) keep a Kosher dairy kitchen. I do not have the rooom for meat dissshes, pots, pans, etc. I have to re-kasher (make Kosher again) the kitchen because of (i) the trefe (non-Kosher) chicken taht I brought in & ate, (ii) teh admixture of meat & milk in some of the foods that I brought in & ate, & (iii) my aides' co-mingling my regular silverware, etc, wwith the plastic flatware, etc, that I provided. (They washed with the same sponge, for example.) I do not have the energy at this time to re-kasher, but will do so as soon as other priorities are met in their turn.
Thanks for your good interest. Yours in Him, Deb PS See the Kosher Living sub-Forum in Recipes for relevant discussion.)

Deb, it's terrific letter! To my thinking, there are times when they should pay for hot food - if you're really sick and can't prepare your own... Do you mean to tell me that if the chicken had been cooled, they would have funded it? If so, it's absurd. Continue to feel better, Deb. It sounds as though you've really had a time of it.
