I planted two 2-year old grapevines two years ago.  Both bore grapes the second year they were in the ground, which wouldhave been at 4 years old.  Is it possible that the blossoms on yours were hit by frost? How old were the vines you planted?

I don't know how long it takes before they produce grapes, but growing up as a child we had a large area in our back yard that was concord grapes and the white grapes. They were so sweet, My brothers and I would eat them until we were literally sick from eating to many in a day...my grandmother would make jelly and wine. Where I live now, my neighbor has a concord grapevine that partially hangs into my back yard Big Smile...concord grapes grow wild all over this Island.....

Newfs, are concord grapes sour? One of these years I want to try grapes and I've heard that they're sour. Concord grapes are the ones that lower blood pressure, so I was interested in growing them, but I'd like to have a good eating grape, too.

Pat, Concords are not sour....,more a nice sweet with a little tart. They arent ready here until late fall, the cool makes them sweeter, in my opinion. Makes great juice and jelly. Babs

babs is right...concord grapes are sweet and so juicy. You usually don't find them in grocery stores for sale. Concord grapes are a very deep, dark purple. They always have seeds in them. If you ever have Smuckers grape jam, it's made with concord grapes. They do grow crazy wild here on this Island. So much so, it's how the name got to be part of the Islands name_______Martha's VINEYARD Island Wink

    That's cool!

Thanks to both of you for the information. It sounds like that's the grape I want.

I wish I knew how long it takes for grape vines to produce.  Dh planted a few varieties a couple of years ago - they're still pretty small, but they keep coming back.  We also tried to "recycle" some ages-old concord grape vines from someone on Freecycle last year, but it doesn't look like they survived the move. We're holding out until end of May though to make sure the vines are completely dead. Dh would just like to see some grapes sometime in his lifetime Smile

Normally 4 years until you can some grapes. MyConcords are just now starting to put out some leaves. I would be patient with them. You must be in about the same weather temps as Vermont. We are doiing that 33 at night and 70 during the day. Babs
