    need bbq sauce recipe

Does anyone have a simple recipe for bbq sauce?  I searched the forums and didn't find anything and I searched allrecipes.com, but I can't honestly tell a good one from a bad one.  Plus a lot of them are listing a TON of ingredients.  Normally, I would purchase Kraft bbq sauce, but I'm trying to use stuff in the house so we have less to move in a few weeks.  Oh, I should mention, I'm looking for a ketchup or tomato-based sauce, not a vinegar-based sauce.

    Thank you so much!!!

I have tried a couple of the online recipes and have yet to find a good one. Instead I have wasted some ingredients in the experiment. I too hope someone can share a good one.

I've used Betty Crocker's barbecued ribs sauce since I was a little girl -- it was one of my first "grown up" recipes I ever followed, actually. Big Smile  Not sure what you're using it with, but this recipe makes enough to work with 2 pounds of ribs (as marinade and for basting during cooking).

    1/2 cup catsup

    2 tablespoons packed brown sugar

1 tablespoon lemon juice (pickle juice works, too)

    1 teaspoon salt

    1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

    1/4 teaspoon ground ginger

Very simple and yummy -- my husband ALWAYS asks for more!  Hope you enjoy!

This is our favorite. My husband usually doesn't like homemade BBQ sauce except for this one!  It has molasses in it, so the longer it sits the thicker it gets. I use for everything from pork to beef to burgers. Enjoy!

    1 c. ketchup

    1/2 c. packed brown sugar

    1/3 c. sugar

    1/4 c. honey

    1/4 c. molasses

    2 tsp prepared mustard

    1 1/2 tsp worcestershire sauce

    1/8 tsp pepper

    1/4 tsp salt

    1/4 tsp liquid smoke

Combine all the ingredients and bring to a boil.

    here a couple I use

     Honey Spiced BBQ Sauce

    1 1/4 Cup Catchup
    2/3 Cup Salad oil
    3/4 Cup Vinegar
    5 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
    1 Cup Honey
    2 Tablespoon Dry mustard
    3 Teaspoon Ginger, fresh grated
    1 Lemon, sliced thinly
    3 Tablespoons Butter

Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and heat to blend together.

and this one the guys love with ribs  ( I cut the cayenne pepper out and they dont seem to notice  if you want yours hot add it)

    2 Tbs. vegetable oil

    1 onion, finely chopped

    3 garlic cloves, minced

    1 1/2 cups ketchup

    1/2 cup cider vinegar

    1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce

    1/3 cup sugar

    1 Tbs. chili powder

1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper if needed

Warm the oil on medium beat in a saucepan. Add the onion and garlic and cook gently, stirring, for about 5 minutes. Add the ketchup, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce , sugar, chili powder and cayenne, to taste (the more cayenne you use, the hotter it will be).

Reduce the heat and simmer, partially covered, until the sauce has thickened slightly, about 20 minutes. Makes about 2 1/2 cups

Thank you so much everyone!  For at least 2 of these I have all the makings on hand, which is partly what I needed.  What I don't try tomorrow, I will try another time!

    Re: need bbq sauce recipe

I played around with BBQ sauces for a few years before I created this one.  It is excellent with grilled chicken and ribs.  It doesn't seem to burn as easily as the store bought because there isn't a ton of sugar in it.

     1 c. ketchup

    1/2c. brown sugar

    2 tbls vinegar

    2 1/2 tbls chili powder

1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (or less if you don't like it too peppery)

    2 tsp salt

    1 tsp pepper

handful cut-up onions - dried onions are good too

Mix all together and let sit overnight in fridge for flavors to blend.

    Re: need bbq sauce recipe

I have made my own since I was first married at 18.  My mom has always made bbq sauce, too.  I just use ketchup, yellow mustard, worcestershire sauce, vinegar (cider or red wine is really good), maple or cane syrup, brown sugar, cayenne or Tabasco, bit of freshly ground black pepper, and finely chopped onion.  I mix it all together until I like the flavor......ketchup is the base and just small amounts of the others.  I make it thicker for grilled chicken or pork chops but thin it down with water (adjusting flavors as needed) for pulled pork.  I add a little more vinegar if I want it more sour or more brown sugar if I want a sweeter sauce.  I really like to saute the onions first and then cook the sauce for about 20 minutes at a very low simmer with a spatter screen on top!

I also make a bourbon sauce from a friend's secret bbq competition recipe and a SC mustard style sauce.

Dump BBQ Sauce-  I have made this recipe for years.  Got to the point, I just "dump" the ingredients.  I hate dirtying-up a measuring cup or measuring spoons.  I have a set of 12oz. coffee mugs I use, cause there is always a clean one in the cupboard.

#1-   Saute some chopped onion ( If you want onion) in butter.  Take it out of the pan and set it aside.

#2-    1 coffee mug of cheap ketchup: 1/2 mug of vinegar; 1/2 mug of water; 2 or 4 fistfuls of brown sugar; 2 or 3 ' big plops' of yellow mustard

#3      Add whatever seasoning/spices you are in the mood for.  Sometimes I add some "liquid smoke".  Add the onions and cook sauce down.

                        Isn't much easier than that!

I love a good homemade bbq sauce!  I like my tomato-y and fairly sweet.  Here is a link to the one we use at our house.  If you would like to make a big batch, it stores well in the fridge for up to two weeks.
