    Warning About the Tax Credit

"Millions of Americans enjoying their small windfall from President Barack Obama's "Making Work Pay" tax credit are in for an unpleasant surprise next spring.

The government is going to want some of that money back."

What I found disturbing is that many retirees who collect Social Security may have to pay back some of their credit.

    Isn't bureaucracy wonderful?? Tongue Tied

I can understand how it can get complicated with those who have multiple incomes but not for those who are collecting social security.

Dh and I are on pensions, not social security, and even though we pay income tax, there has been no change in our monthly income. We don't really want anything more from the government anyway, but it seems that our limited group of pensioners fell through the cracks when it came to stimulus amounts. There may have been some who needed that extra income, but when reporting about that extra money news reports state, "working people, railroad pensioners, and social security recipients", none of which we are.  Edey

Some people who collect SS also work to supplement it, so you could say they have mulitiple incomes, too.

if you are on ss and work at a supplemental job,  would it work if you saved the check you got for ss and use it to pay back for double payments?  does the ss stimulus come in one lump sum check or a little each month??

Re: Warning About the Tax Credit

SS recipients get a lump check of $250. I don't know that the whole amount would be due back in taxes, that would depend on how much other income you had. It seems to me that it would be wise to put it into savings until tax time next year. I suspect that SS recipients would get the same withholding break (so-called) as others from their work income, so that would have to be dealt with, too.

Maybe... just maybe, they'll get a fix on this before taxes are due next year. We can hope.
