Re: How Does Your Garden Grow? Summer 2009 Garden Club!

My peppers and eggplants aren't doing a thing either - I went out and bought two more peppers and an unusual eggplant to replace some that probably won't make it.  Veggies were half off at the garden center.  Finally have some cucumbers sprouting, this is my second planting b/c the first just did not sprout.  Less than half sprouting this time.  Guessing not a good year for cukes.  Spinach finally coming up after I re-seeded as well. It has been a few years since I have had a good carrot crop, but they are coming up really nicely this year.  Broccoli and tomatoes are all doing great so far.  Had my first home grown tomatoes this past week - had a plant growing in a pot since the winter, and it had a hard time adjusting to the outside, so it took a while to get those first ones.  But never picked a fresh tomato in june before, so it was nice.

So far, my garden this year is producing more than we ever have before!

My squash is out of control-have already given a bag full away because I already have a ton of it in the fridge!  And the plants amaze me, there will be a tiny squash formed and the next day it'll be huge!  Having trouble keeping up with it-might have planted a few too many plants, but it's really nice to have enough to give to others.  Both the zucchini and pattypans are like this.

The peppers are awesome too-the plants are loaded, both the bells and the chilis.  Unfortunately, have suffered some blossom end rot on the red bells but I think I have figured out a solution-think they need more time to dry out between watering.  Picked a few off that were rotting so the plants wouldn't waste more energy on them.  There are still tons left on the reds and yellows so not to worry.  Picking tons of jalapenos and italian peppers as well-gave a few of those away too!

The very best is the tomatoes I have picked-have had 3 beefsteaks and a good handful of grape tomatoes gets picked almost daily.  You forget the amazing difference in flavor between a homegrown, really fresh tomato and a store bought one!  Wow!  So good-can't wait for lunch today as I'm having a tomato and mozzarella salad.  Mmmm . . . not just need to get those heirlooms producing!  I think I understand why they are $6/lb at the store now-not the easiest things to grow!

The english cucumbers are producing but not ready to pick.  The melons have flowers but no fruit yet.  The corn is getting tall, a couple have flowers forming!  Love watching the corn-my first time growing it, very fun.  Will definitely do it again.  I've picked quite a bit from the blackberry bush, but it's still a young plant and though it has produced a good amount, not as much as I would have thought, berries are a bit tart too.

Strawberries need to come out-they are wasting space really.  I'll try to resist planting strawberries in the future-they are so hard to resist but they just don't produce for me-the snails love them too much and so does the dog!  Have only had a few for myself!  Fava beans need to come out too-there's enough for a nice pasta dish or something.  Need to pull out the plants and harvest the remaining beans and be done with them.

    Stick out tongue

The wildflowers that I planted are growing. I am still able to make use of the onion tops as well. The rest is dismal or dead.

One of my peppers is flowering now--but the plant is still so small, I'm worried about how it will ever manage to produce fruit. Maybe I need to feed it more compost.

My peppers are struggling this year, too. We haven't had much sunshine, though, so I'm hoping that as the weather clears up, they'll begin to grow. They've had buds on them for a couple of weeks, but haven't bloomed out.

The spaghetti squash is beginning to set fruit, but the zucchini and yellow squash haven't started flowering yet. I planted something then forgot what it was... it's either a cucumber or a melon. LOL! I never do that, but I had a hard time deciding which one to plant since my space is limited and I don't remember which one I decided on!

The hail wiped out most of the okra, but everything else is coming along. Beans are starting to bloom, too. It won't be long before I'll be in the midst of harvesting things daily.

Babs, how lucky you are to have so many strawberries already put up. I LOVE strawberries, they are the only berry I eat. Ihave been making strwberry smoothies everyday now for a week. Vanilla rice milk, fresh pineapple, strawberries, and a lot of fresh ginger. It so yummy, it is a meal in itself.... strawberries a $3.00 for the qt container, I have been freezing them. I check my garden everyday now Big Smile cause everything is starting to "pop"... I see 3 zucchinis, and lots of tiny yellow squash. A couple of tiny peppers. My beets will be ready to pick in a couple of weeks, my peas are getting picked almost daily, I had to tie them up, they are growing like mad. Lots of flowers on my tomatoes, I have been "shakin them", helping them to pollinate Big Smile...lettuce is almost gone by now, till I replant more seeds in late August. My beans and eggplants are doing well too.... my new mission is to keep my eyes open on prices of mid-size frost-free upright freezers, has to be a enegry star too. I plan on freezing tons of veggies, and making lots of tomatoe sauce......

    Until we Newf again....

Two, three, four, tell us what the garden bore...

It was an itsy-bitsy, teeny-weeny, yellow-flowered green zucchini that I saw for the first time today! :-D First one of the season, and there are more blossoms where that came from.

The string beans are also flowering, and I can detect the first tiny beans forming. There are also tiny, incipient fruits on one of the pepper plants (the Yellow Cheese) and one of the tomato plants (a Sun Gold). My snow peas are still producing, which throws out all my calculations, since my plan was to plant the winter squash in the same spot after I'd finished harvesting the peas. But since it means more snow peas, I can't really complain. Most of what I harvested off them this week is going into a stir-fry tonight.

The pumpkin vine is growing like mad and intruding on my onions. I was planning to put it on a trellis, but it seems to have sort of gotten away from me. The corn is also growing rapidly--well past my knees already--so I have hopes of having fresh sweet corn to serve when my in-laws come to visit at the end of July.

The one crop that's nearing its end is the lettuce. It's interesting how I can now clearly distinguish the heads that I actually planted this year from the ones that reseeded themselves from last year. Last year I planted a generic Bibb variety from the rack at the drugstore, and those plants are now starting to bolt. But this year's plants are a bolt-resistant variety called Tom Thumb, and they still look like proper round heads of lettuce. So we should get a few more salads out of this garden before the dog days arrive.

Haverwrench, souns like you have been getting the same kind of rainy, cloudy weather for weeks on end, like we have in MA. I did get a ton of lettuce to, it has been so cool here the lettuce never bolted. I pulled up the lettuce yeasterday, and replaced the row with more string beans. Now I have 5 different rows of beans growing at different stages. My plan is to continously plant bean seeds through mid July, that should cover my bean crops till September. I did pick 3 zucchinis so far, but they were smallish. I have tiny peppers showing up tooSmile and little green tomatoes....because of the wet weather this season, I think the east coast gardens are about 2-3 weeks behind producing much veggies. I'am not to worried about it though, the next 8-10 weeks is plenty enough time for the garden to play "catch-up"....as long as it STOPS raining all the timeStorm

Hi all, Heres my bounty so far:

One Lemon Cukecumber, we picked it and at ate it and DD loved it.  There are more blooms, but I don't see much else happening on that plant.

I have lots of tomatoes coming in... green, but really healthy looking!

My lettuce is about 5 - 5 inchs long, but not very wide... ??

I have blooms on my the eggplant as well.

I am very happy with my first pot garden as I call it - I get second looks!  ;-)
