How Does Your Garden Grow? Summer 2009 Garden Club!
Would anyone like to keep a regular report going about what you are planting/growing, how it's doing etc? There was a thread that developed into something like kind of like this last year and I learned a lot from it!
If anyone is interested, would love to read your reports of what you're planting, how much and when, what you are doing to help your plants as they grow and establish themselves (pest control/water issues/fertilizing/etc), and of course, what you are harvesting, how much and what you are doing with it (what you coooked from your garden, what you preserved, etc).
I know we are all in different areas and zones, which makes it even more interesting! I know some haven't started yet and some are in full swing. I still have lots to learn and can't wait to hear your stories, celebrate your successes and gather new tips I can use in my own gardening adventures.
Happy Gardening!

Re: How Does Your Garden Grow? Summer 2009 Garden Club!
Sounds like fun! I have planted beets, onions, lettuce, radishes and peas so far. The peas probably won't do well, if they even come up because I used old seed just because I had it, and then we had rain for two days and the gutter downspout leaked and created a stream across the bed where they were planted. I'll wait until early to mid May and if they don't come up, I'll plant a warm weather crop there (after repairing the downspout!). I transplanted strawberries earlier to a larger area and they're doing well so far. Forgot that I also planted Jerusalem artichokes for the first time here and a rhubarb plant. I'm not sure the rhubarb is going to make it. It doesn't look to much alive right now and I thought it should have been putting out leaves by now. Beets, onions and lettuce are up and growing. The radishes were planted about three days ago so they won't be up for a few more days.

Re: How Does Your Garden Grow? Summer 2009 Garden Club!
I have leaf lettuce from seed in a pot which is doing pretty well but not sure if it'll last too much longer with the heat. My first attempt and the lettuce has been delicious!
I have herbs in pots too, from seed, cilantro, basil, & flat leaf parsley. They are doing very well, though the parsley was knocked over by the kids and probably needs more seeds added, there's not a huge amount left in there!
So far, have planted sweet white corn (my first attempt!) from seed . . . just saw yesterday that they have come up. Yay!
Have planted hot peppers-8 (jalapenos-3, local hot chili variety-1, cayenne-1, rellenos-2, italian frying pepper-1). Have one extra jalapeno to plant still for total of 9 chilis (these are mostly all for DH though if I get enough tomatoes, will make some salsa).
Have also planted bell peppers-8 (3 yellow, 3 red, 2 purple)
Planted zucchini seeds yesterday (2 dark green, 2 light green, 2 yellow).
Still have more to go. Melons, pattypan squash, tomatoes, cucumbers, and a 2nd round of corn left to do.
My cool season stuff needs to come out. Broccoli has gone to flower, fava bean plants are beautiful but won't produce with the heat we are having (definitely will over winter these next year), head lettuce needs to come out as it will likely bolt soon because of the heat. Still have strawberries which look very nice and I will leave them . . . tons of berries on them waiting to ripen! Need to clear that space for my waiting tomatoes and a few other things.

Re: How Does Your Garden Grow? Summer 2009 Garden Club!
Jennylyn, Thanks for starting this thread.....
I have started lots from seeds early March, planted some seedlings and I have also dierctly sowed seeds in the garden. What is in the garden now as seedlings and seeds that have sprouted are... Broccoli, Peas, Beets, Radishes, Swiss Chard, Red & Green Chefs Blend Lettuce, Parsnips, Scallions and Spinach What is growing in the house, just waiting for last frost date May1-15, then these go in the garden as seedlings are... 4 types of Tomatoes, 2 types of Sweet Peppers, 2 types of Cukes, Summer Squash, Zucchinni, Basil, Marjoram, Dill, Oregano, Thyme, Triple Curly Parsley, Sage, and Rosemary And the last are seeds that will be a direct sow in the garden in mid-May, and these will be.... Bush type green string beans, bush type wax beans, pole type purple italian string beans My garden has been planned out on paper and I began the process in January. All veggies were all started from seeds. The only plant that will NOT be started from a seed is one Brandywine Tomato plant that I plan to buy as a seedling in the next week or two, that is if I can find one....buying the seeds was the cheapest part of the garden. Buying the admendents for the soil was a kick in the butt for $$, but I had the horticulurist from the high school test my soil and he said I need this and I need that. The old saying goes, "Not testing your soil prior to planting is like buying a used car without test driving it"... I also invested in a soil kit of my own which tests for 4 different things in the soil. I hope I am all done with the Chemistry lesson on dirt...LOL...and I can hopefully enjoy the garden and the produce is rewards me with.....
Until we Newf again....

Re: How Does Your Garden Grow? Summer 2009 Garden Club!
We didn't get ambitious this year. We have 3 tomato plants (DH's) and I have two pots of mini tomatoes but only one little plant is peeking through. I also have a small pot of breakfast radishes that are stretching toward the sun and will be ready to harvest and re-plant in 3 weeks.
We also put of 4 trash bags with potatoes and have had to re-cover them 3 times now.
My onions are doing good. I need to go get some of them out to have as "line onion" (green onions) and will leave some in to get bigger.

I have planted onions, parsley, radish, potatoes, sweet pea flowers, english daisies, roses and I am growing brocolli and radish sprouts. The onion tops are nice and green, the radish are growing nicely and the sprouts are coming out the seeds.

Re: How Does Your Garden Grow? Summer 2009 Garden Club!
WOW Gayla, I love your extensive veggie list....for this year at least, I have to stick with the types of veggies that will freeze well and are expensive to buy at the grocery store. I am sure taters, carrots, eggplants taste so much better home grown, but my garden is maxed out with the amount that will be growing in it. For the time being at least, things like taters and carrots are relatively cheap to buy, so they were omitted from the garden this year. I hope to expand the size of the garden next spring. Right now it's a 20 foot by 34 foot garden space. I hope to make it 40 foot by 34 foot nexy year. I just have to make sure I can handle all the work in keeping it up by myself.... Gayla you also do a lot of "canning?" My grandmother use to do a lot to. I remember as a child she would can, but I remember her using parafin wax? And she also use those red rubber ball brand seals? I would love to learn how to properly can veggies, but I am soooooo afraid I won't do it correctly and the food that got put up will become toxic or something....I wish someone around here would give a few classes on how to properly put food up.... because I would love to learn.....
Until we Newf again....
